Savory, pungent, explosive aromas. Mushrooms cooking down in red wine. Umami. More umami. So good. Maybe not aging for much longer, so go get it. At its best in the glass, it had moments of brilliant lusciousness. Happy to have experienced it. — 10 years ago

Well-it is an ascensional deliciousness. And smells of an alpine spring. Feels like the fountain of youth a la Ponce de Leon or something. Joy, pure joy in the glass. — 11 years ago

Light and refreshing. Spontaneous secondary fermentation in bottle yields a tiny bubble. Apparently happens if and when it wants to. — 11 years ago

Cannubi Barolo Nebbiolo 1958

1958 vintage. From Jay. 1958 Bartolo Mascarello - Brief Note from Galloni Historical Retrospective Held in London April 26, 2016. From 1.9L format. Very light rose colour. Typical nose of crushed roses and violets mixed with ancient saddle leather and a hint of very old crushed mint. The wine still posses good fruit although it is clearly in the twilight of its life. Some medicinal elements on the palette but these are enjoyable and well integrated. Otherwise the palette is both ethereal and elegant. It has both poise and elegance and remains a gorgeous expression of Nebbiolo despite its maturity. Fraises sauvages, raspberries, and hints of slightly unripened pomegranate blend together seamlessly. The finish is smooth with medium length. I have been fortunate enough to have this wine on three separate occasions in the last twelve months and my notes have been consistent. 96/100. Drink Now. — 10 years ago

Giacomo Conterno

Riserva Monfortino Barolo Nebbiolo 1958

1958 Giacomo Conterno Monfortino: from Jay. This was the Ying to the Mascarello's Yang. Lovely rich ruby colour with virtually no bricking on the edge. The nose developed over the course of 15 to 20 mins in the glass. Unlike the Mascarello that was shedding perfume from the moment it hit the glass, the Monfortino needed more air before becoming less brooding. Dark fruits on the nose. Purple plums, black cherries, some forest floor, light tobacco as well as some floral elements prevailed. The palette was a reflection of the nose so no surprises. The fruit was far from dried out and this particular bottle still had plenty of life left in it but from my recent experience this is the exception rather than the rule. I have had around 10 bottles of old Monfortino ('55 / '58 / and '61) over the last year and the bottle variation, as you would expect, is tremendous with the majority of them past their prime. The finish was strong and in keeping with the rest of the package with reasonable length and quality. Drink now. 95/100.

Served lightly chilled with salumi and grilled flatbread. Love this wine more every time I drink it. Very good. Fruity with enough tannin and acid to work perfectly with antipasti. Like as much as B. Mascarello and Brovia Dolcettos. Thanks @bevetroppo and Jan D'Amore. — 12 years ago
