Tenth red wine at our annual DMV South African wine tasting. Medium to deep ruby red. Chalky attack on the nose with a touch of greenery not vegetal, sweet spices and currants. Medium plus tannins (7.5/10) and full bodied. Dark and rich sweet spices and cherries on the attack. Some earthiness and rocks as well on the palate. Long finish. Drink till 2022. — 8 years ago
South African blend of mostly Rhône grapes. Similar nose to fuller Southern Rhône blend, perhaps Vacqueyras. Notes of blackberry, violet, black pepper, cocoa nibs. Dry, medium to full body on the palate. — 9 years ago
Having visited the vineyard, I have fond memories whenever I enjoy Vrede en Lust wines, but this one is such a pleasure to enjoy. Smooth with a South African twist! Love it! — 9 years ago
Best South African chardonnay I've tasted. Stone fruit flavours and slightly sweeter than expected. Stands up to full flavoured food. — 10 years ago
One of my all time favourites. Good with any red meat. — 7 years ago
Excellent classic South African Cab. Earthy, mushroom, currant with a lengthy, savory finish. — 7 years ago
You would not initially think this was a South African wine as it lacks the typical unique earthiness you would usually detect. Instead this has a huge cherry bouquet. It’s overwhelming initially but mellows after breathing for an hour and becomes a very respectable effort. Dark and syrupy and unique in its own right. — 8 years ago
3.5. Delicious smooth Bordeaux-type wine with just the right fruits and tannins. From first whiff until the lingering taste a very satisfying if inexpensive wine. On sale for $14.99, usually $16.99. This is one of the best South African reds I have tasted. — 9 years ago
Best South African wine I've ever had! — 10 years ago
One of the greatest South African wines, blown away by the smooth texture, wonderful flavour. — 10 years ago
In appearance, I would have called this Napa as it had a deep purple rim but once you smelled it, it was South African through and through. Though I’ve only had a limited experience with SA wines, I’ve normally gotten a unique smell, reminiscent of smoked rubber. A lot of potpourri to this too. Black fruits (blackberries, cassis) with an herbal and tannic/slightly chalky finish. Well made. — 7 years ago
Loving South African wines more and more. Unique minerality, almost a faint burnt rubber smell, grapefruit, pineapple, lemon-lime. Medium body and super refreshing for this Texas heat. — 8 years ago
Delicious South African cab — 9 years ago
This is now my fourth South African wine (second from @Greg Ballington ) and this is definitely the best red that I've had. Gave it about 45-mins of air time and it improved through an hour and a half. Red in the glass, which I'm finding common for South African cabs. Not extremely fruit dominant, but not dominant in any other note either. A balance of cherries, cranberries, tobacco and graphite/lead on the nose. Good weight to it on the palate. Cedar and rhubarb accentuate the finish. A very enjoyable cab blend and I expect it to be firing on all cylinders the second day. Probably at its best in 7 years or so. Many thanks again for introducing this to me, Greg! My buddy @Cody Cotten , who visited South Africa a while back, really loved this as did I! — 9 years ago

Rich and ripe, slightly oily texture, though lovely acidity. This is a great example of where the future of South African wine is headed — 10 years ago

A really wonderful South African Bordeaux style wine. It’s called creative block 5 because it has the five primary Bordeaux grapes blended into a nicely structured red with a complex set of flavours including blackberry, cherry and dark chocolate with hints of woody cedar, leather and cigar box. We decanted for 2 hours and paired it with a grilled ribeye that included our attempt to create the legendary “café de Paris sauce” (green tarragon-based-butter-shallot-white wine sauce) Amazing! — 6 years ago
