The 2016 Barbaresco Gaiun Martinenga packs a serious punch. The rich style of this site married to the classicism of the year results in a Barbaresco that is going to need a bit of time to come around. Gaiun is often plush and voluptuous. In 2016, large-scaled tannins wrap around all of that fruit intensity, adding a very appealing dimension of structure. Sweet red cherry, cinnamon, mint, cedar, rose petal and blood orange build into the complex, layered finish. I have seen the Gaiun age effortlessly in its top vintages. I have no doubt that it will be the case here as well. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, October 2020)

2016 vintage. Last tasted 2.10.23 (9.6). Tasted after being open for 10 hours. Good god...Medium body and concentration into the next life. Under the rocks and stones...5.3.24.

Dried roses, Bing cherry, damp earth, baking spice. And that very Italian dusty/chalky smell, like a stone cold church basement. Sexy mouthfeel. Had with carbonara and guanciale.

2016 vintage. Behold...the herald Destroyer! An absolute shrapnel bomb for the palate. Taking exactly zero prisoners currently and for the majority of the next two decades. Dig up this rambunctious time capsule after 2038 if you desire a suggestion or two of finesse within. If visiting too early, prepare to be boarded and cast adrift with permanent tannin teeth and loosened fillings. Don't say you weren't warned.
