Dark cherry with traces of lilac and thin edges in the glass. Wonderfully deep aromas of blue and black fruits up top with stewed plums complimenting. A bit of oak but never gratuitous. Dark chocolate and freshly brewed coffee. The herbs, spice, and smoked tobacco really elevate this.

This is real Merlot. The good stuff. Not Syrah or something else masquerading as Merlot. Softer and thinner, in the good way, than so many other California Merlots. Firm tannins and medium acidity. This gets a bit fat here and there but never flabby and ridiculous. Just delectable in the mouth. Maintains nice balance throughout.

The palate is smooth and straightforward with more blue fruit. The palate follows the nose closely with the addition of a little green bell pepper. Showing plenty of restraint and focus here, as well. This is an excellent cool climate California Merlot. It’s what you should be drinking instead of that other stuff.

I expected more from a 2011, but for the price and a bad cork I’m not too disappointed. It’s light and airy with hints of black cherries and red licorice (not that sweet though!). Sliver lining is you can pair this with just about anything. I’m certain after it breathes a bit the rest of the bottle will be better... Happy New Year!

Loved it!!! Great peppery taste, easy tannins, blackberry fruit, hints of spice, rosemary and mint! Can definitely taste the peppers and spices from the soil
