Secondary notes of earth & damp cellar from the age. Just about to fall over the hill, but after pouring a second taste, I get some olive & ginger notes. Tasted a few younger Cali Pinots today, but this older gentleman stands out in a great way.

More dark-fruited than the elegant, red-fruited 2001, this is pretty disjointed and tannic, lacking the lively acidity of the 2001, interesting contrast, though admittedly I don’t remember much about the vintage seasons of 2000 vs. 2001 Hirsch vintages, good, but ready to drink.

So stunning for an 18 year old wine! Showing the slightest bit of age, as well as red currant, pomegranate, dried cranberry, dried rosemary, plum sauce, porcini mushroom. Still so much acid, silky smooth palate. Clearly a well-made wine.
