95% Shiraz, 5% Cabernet. Considered to be one of the top 5 Granges in the 50 years between 1951 and 2001. I’ve always rated the 91 slightly higher than the 1990 which put Grange on the map in the USA when Wine Spectator made it their Wine of the Year and front page of their magazine. Nicely mature at 32 years with at least another decade or two in front of it. Black fruits of berry and cherry with mocha and dark chocolate. An absolutely smashing opulent wine which is made to go with Roast Lamb. Next one in 5 to 10 years.

Prior to opening I noticed minor ullage with level being at high shoulder. Dense dark crimson - the colour would not lead you to believe it was 27 years old. Dusty dark berries with a whiff of leather (Barb). Strong aromas of cassis and also notes of coconut American Oak which I wasn’t expecting after all these years, but it is in balance with the fruit. On the palate there is power with molten tannins. Still with a good future into the 2030s. The previous vintage 1990 was Wine Spectators wine of the Year and largely put Grange on the map in the USA. Many good judges in Australia now prefer the 1991 to the 1990 and I am inclined to agree. I have 4 left from an original dozen and should have the next in about 2 to 3 years time.

A cooler nose, spice, pepper, a plummy, bloody nose. Rounded and balanced. Quiet cool, poised and contained. Long and lovely.

Vibrant young deep crimson colour- could be 10 years old. Still has the Penfolds Choc/Malt/Berry DNA with notes of a dusty chest of drawers. Palate is surprisingly of medium intensity where Grange usually has more power than this. Berry fruits developing savoury leathery notes - had riper berry characteristics earlier in its life. The nose is a beauty but in the taste off with the Hill of Grace 1991 I will call it a draw.

The 1991 vintage. Good Penfolds Choc Malt. Aromatic. Rich to medium palate. No doubt it is Penfolds but astringency at finish. "Rewards" says to 2040. Personally I would not want to wait that long. 18-

Boys penfolds taste off. First impression nose was distinctive with eculptus. Over the course of about 7 houra of decanter, this wine improves significantly especially on the nose. The final glass reflect the true top class wine of australia. Balance, abit of blue fruit and overally the crowd went from saying being dissapointed to saying it is world class standard. Think it can be kept for longer time, maybe another 5 to 10 yrs

1991 vintage. Tasting with Peter Gago at Magill Estate. Not great. Soy sauce, slightly tired and fruit fading. On the palate, drying on finish. Bit of a limp finish. Was expecting so much more. Could have been a bad bottle.

Good. Medium to full body. Settled fireplace ashes, cocoa, crushed Autumn leaves and sage on the nose. Slightly grippy tannins at the front of the palate that could extend flavor profile through cellaring. Flavors of berries and plums that are not missed.
