Second winery on day two in Sonoma was Hanzell Vineyards with Whitney. Last wine was the Hanzell Pinot Noir, which is their flagship Pinot Noir bottling. All the fruit comes from three of their estate vineyards with an average age of 26 years; de Brye, Sessions and Ambassador's 1953 vineyards. This bottling is fermented for a five-day cold soak and 10% is whole cluster. Aged for 18 months in 63% new French oak barrels (60 gallon).

Medium garnet red with light ruby edges. Love the nose, like a true high-end Burgundian Pinot Noir. Layered with cedar, spices, sandalwood, raspberries, tobacco, purple flowers, white pepper and a touch of dark citrus. Medium plus acidity (7/10) and medium plus bodied. Elegant yet balanced with cherries, red berries, spices, Provencal herbs and forest floor. Long and never-ending finish. Drink till 2035.

$$$ - Tasted at the winery. Retail price is $98.00.

Medium brick red, stewed strawberries, red plums, tobacco leaf, white tea, cloves. Medium plus acidity, more full bodied and hot on the tongue than expected at first but vastly improved after aerating and opening up for an hour. Will age the other bottles a few more years.

Pop and pour. A tawny crimson red color. On the nose: tart cherries, tea, forest floor, sandlewood, and earth. Taste: Elegant and approachable with a restrained style of cherries, pine tree, tea, with a strawberry toast medium plus finish. Nice start to the weekend! Cheers!

An elegant Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. Great aromas of red fruit, oak, and pie crust. At first taste, you are hit with a hint of fruit but really more mineral like tastes that suddenly are overtaken by tastes of strawberries, raspberries, butterscotch, and chocolate. The tannins are ultra-sleek and the acidity is perfect. A beautiful fruit filled finish with some floral overtones. A very nice old world style California Pinot.
