I’ve got a soft spot for the wines of August Clape and this was a great showing but, and I’m really splitting hairs here, it just didn’t have the character that the ’09 Allemand had on this night. I found this bottle to be more about the 2009 vintage than anything else; enormous waves of sweet, ripe fruit with a soft, plush, luxurious texture. It was just a bit one dimensional tonight.

This is terrific. Certainly a big wine but in balance. Core of earth, mineral and a bit of blood/iron surrounded by dark fruit. Decanted for a bit. Can hold a long time but was delicious now.

Still very youthful, floral & elegant with notes of black cherry, raspberry, black pepper, licorice & violet. This threw off a lot of sediment,

Beautiful vintage for Clape that is open & drinking well showing black cherry, kirsch, pepper, iron, licorice & violet.

Jan 11th, 2020Auguste Clape was a pioneer in Cornas and a legend in the Northern Rhône. Enjoying this bottle in his memory. I was fortunate to visit the cellar twice and receive an incredibly warm welcome from the family.
The 2009 is dynamite. It is more open than I expected. Nose is vibrant with green and white peppercorn, smoked meats, allspice and road tar wrapped around dark plum, cassis and blackberry fruit. Palate is rich and dense as expected from a hot vintage. Black fruit mingles with spice, warm stones and soy flavors. Intense and long in the juicy fruit driven finish. While it can be enjoyed currently, I suggest 3 to 5 more years in a cool cellar.
Happy to move 8 cases of wine to get to this beauty.
