Domaine Alain Voge
Les Chailles Cornas Syrah
Cornas, Northern Rhône, Rhône, France

Dense and very ripe fruited, so classically Syrah with an abundance of dark plum, blackberry and blackcurrant, violet and freshly ground pepper. The nose it’s gutsy and quite overwhelming - I sniffed this for a long time before taking the first sip. There’s a touch of brett, masquerading as damp earth, but it works.
On the palate the wine continues to be dense and full bodied, with wonderfully pure fruit, ripe tannins and a streak of iron. Exceptional grip. This wine is a Cornas of great quality (and value) and shows how good 2016 can be.

Given Voge reputation, I expected more from this wine. Maybe it’s not quite ready yet, but it was a bit underwhelming. Quite shy on the palate, the length was there, but not the complexity. The acidity was pronounced on the second day. I’ll wait another few years until I open the next bottle.

Classy Rhone. Open for 30 min, rounded and soft on the nose, blueberry/raspberry with an undercurrent of dry earth. Some spice on the palate. Well made.

The winemaker says that you can drink the Chailles young. Made from 50 yr old vines in granite soils. He also felt that the 16 was a better vintage than the 15 only exceeded by the 2010.
