I've always been sceptical about American wine so decided to buy a Californian Pinot Noir - my favourite grape - to correct any preconceptions. The age also excited me - an eight year old Pinot? Yes please. However, it was mighty disappointing. Far too punchy; it had more features of a Grenache or Syrah than Pinot. No delicacy whatsoever. My opinion on American wine remains negative.
