Think of the finest expression of California Grenache and this Alban should come to mind. Not too extracted, not too lean. Eucalyptus aromas, ripe blackberry, almost jammy. Smooth long finish.

Well, it’s a John Alban grenache, so we start at awesome. This is not the best incarnation of this wine in my opinion, but I suspect it’s in a transitional phase. Has a somewhat muted nose of blackberry and cedar. Silky feel across the mid-palate with a lingering finish, but even that seemed like it was still restrained in some way. Might have needed to be decanted, but at 6+ years old I think it more likely that this will be a very different (and superb) wine a year from now. Still terrific, though, and clearly among the top few grenaches made in the New World.
