JH Meyer Wines

Palmiet Elgin Red Blend 2014

This looks to be a reserve bottling of #jhmeyer #southafrica #elgin high altitude pinot noir vineyard called #palmiet #singlesite made #unfinedunfiltered which is pretty standard; however very vulnerable with plain natural cork (makes me guess how it was without cork effects); this is quite aged for low pH pinot, no idea what cork has done; very much the forest floor, funky no-varietal style, heaps sappy, full , oak clever; nice wine, drink now, no need to keep, 13% — 8 years ago

Clonal Selection Elgin Syrah 2012

Surprisingly similar syrah to Cornas; but this is South African Kershaw looking so European; that wild herb, tobacco, sage, earth nose; obviously the terroir of Elgin; not as hot as Cornas so less rich more tight textured; oak behind; sounds like syrah aged all its barrel life on gross lees; 18 barriques; made by colleague Richard Kershaw MW #southafrica #elgin #cape #syrah #2012 13.5% — 9 years ago

Cape Winemakers Guild

Paul Cluver Wines The Wagon Trail Chardonnay 2017

Greg Ballington
9.0

@Delectable Wine this is the 2017 Paul Cluver Wines Cape Winemakers Guild The Wagon Trail Chardonnay.

Our first time every at the Cape Winemakers Guild Auction and we will make sure to come back! (Tasting was on 9/28/18).

Ninth wine at the Friday Auction Tasting for the Cape Winemakers Guild and seventh still white wine. This is made up of 100% Chardonnay by Andries Burger from Elgin. Fruit was 100% wild fermented in 33% new French oak and on the lees for nine months. Only 70 cases produced with 40 being auctioned in 2018.

Light to medium greenish yellow in appearance. Interesting nose with stone and citrus fruits, some creaminess, spices and a touch of oak. Not as much oak influence as some of the other Chardonnays this tasting. Medium plus acidity (7/10) and a bit sharp with a light plus body. Palate likes to linger with layers of peaches, lemons, green apples and some white gravel. Long finish. Drink till 2025.

$$ - Tasted at the Cape Winemakers Auction. Average bid at auction was R4,910.00 ($57.82 a bottle) a case. Highest bid was R5,400.00 ($63.60 a bottle) and lowest bid was R4,600.00 ($54.17 a bottle)
