Freemark Abbey

Fiftieth Reserve Spring Mountain District Red Blend 2013

Similar to the Kongsgaard, this wine that @Bill Makens brought didn't do much for the table...at first. Nose and palate were fairly one dimensional...lots of raspberries. About two to three hours later, this improved significantly. I believe this is dominant merlot, so I was a bit surprised it took so long, but it came on strong at the end. Rounded the flavor profile out with some black pepper and plums. — 9 years ago

@Shay Aldriedge Recommend highly you try some of these wines from the seventies & early- mid 1990s. Especially the two single vineyards. Nothing taste quite like it in Napa.

@David L : If I stumble across any, I will absolutely keep that in mind. I have a few '04 Sycamore cabs from them and they were drinking wonderfully a few months ago when I had one. Could go another 10 easily.

So you're saying it tasted like something other than oak? I had a (probably entry level) cab at Bailey's Prime in FW a few years ago (before they closed obviously) and oak was all that we got for about 2 hours. Their wines are definitely built to be agers!

What a PITA to get your hands on, but damn if it isn't the best domestic Geuze out there. Funky, sour, citrus, crisp. So good. — 10 years ago

This one threw me for a loop. Not typical Napa at all. Very Loire Cab Franc. Haven't had any Freemarks this recent, but if this is a new more restrained style (and they've already managed to stay rather old-school) I'm totally on board. — 11 years ago
