Matthews Cellars

Claret Red Bordeaux Blend

Did a noce vertical experiment tonight with friends (2014-2015-2016). This Claret is a great classic Bordeaux style blend. This 2016 is the heaviest Matthews Claret I had so far. Definitely much drier than the ‘14 and ‘15 but the tannins are smoother. Not as fruit-forward with more spices. — 7 years ago

Piani Noce Dolcetto d'Alba 2015

Takes a little while to open up, so decant this one. Super gulpable once it's had time to get its bearings in the glass. Flavors of prunes and dried figs with notes of cured meats, herbs, and coriander — 9 years ago

Tenuta Sant'Antonio

Scaia Veneto Corvina 2014

A nice bright wine. My first experience with Corvina. I find the body to be full vs. the head or tail, but overall, a noce drinking wine. Good red fruits with an almost citrus or mint burst. — 10 years ago

The person who entered it, had it wrapped in tinfoil. But We decided to unpack it, because it is a pity to not know what you are drinking with such a monumental wine.

Sandhi Wines

Liquore Strega

Saffron Liqueur

Strega is an interesting Italian liqueur...better described below. I only sporadically enjoy it, but it's fun and tasty at each sip.

"Strega is an herbal, saffron-infused liqueur deeply tied to the secret world of witchcraft. Witches are said to convene in Benevento to perform rituals and honor Il Noce, the sacred walnut tree. (The lower part of the logo shows witches dancing with demons around Il Noce.) According to legend, Giuseppe Alberti, son of a grocer, saved a witch from falling out of a tree in the woods. In gratitude, she gave him the recipe for an elixir, which the Alberti family began selling in 1860, perhaps as a curative or restorative.

The liqueur's proprietary recipe is a mix of 70 herbs and spices which include Ceylon cinnamon, Florentine iris, Italian Apennine juniper, Samnite mint, fennel, and saffron. Saffron is the key to Strega's signature yellow color and it shares the spotlight with mint and juniper as the most pronounced flavors within the herbal mixture."
