Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin

La Grande Dame Brut Champagne Blend 1996

Medium gold color. Not showing much in the glass in terms of effervescence and bubbles. A little oxidative on the nose. Notes of bread and a little caramel. Remembered that this came via an auction lot of various bottles so provenance unknown. Interesting that with air it got better as a wine, but as a champagne it was a bit lacking. — 9 years ago

rumor is that good Bandol rosé will shut down for several years after its first two years (according Lucien Peyraud) but will then unfurl nicely. maybe lay them down for a while?

While that is true sometimes, I have had every vintage if this back to 2004 and this is he worst batch of these I have encountered. Bought at JJ Buckley, who would not tell me how they got it except that it was not from Kermit in any way. So, that leads me to think grey market for sure, so who knows how it got here...it also arrived 6 months later than promised, in October. Weird as it's all there, it's just playing at low volume. Acidity, texture and fruit are there, just at 30-40%. This batch has been like this from day 1, the last bottle was the best one of the batch, and this one took a big step back.

Switchback Ridge

Peterson Family Vineyard Merlot 2005

Another kick ass performance from a Spring Mountain merlot. Bold, dense and chewy, expresso and black cherry with significant warmth and length. If you think you don't like merlot ascend the circular back roads of Spring Mountain (or go online if you're lazy) and get a Switchback, Pride Mountain vintner select, Paloma, Keenan or Barnett and you can thank me later. These plump full bodied babes will change your mind about the varietal. — 10 years ago
