The Hatch

Winzerhof Thörle

Saulheimer Kalkstein Spätburgunder 2016

After a disappointing evening wine wise the Germans don’t disappoint.

Nose is deep dense blackberries. Some earth. After 30 minutes it gets some crazy savory depth.

Palate is dense blackberries. Some licorice. Round and a brilliant food wine. Very good deliciousness. After 30 minutes more serious. 1er cru serious. More dense. Gods licorice. Longer.

German pinot is the escape hatch for people priced out of burgundy. Don’t look back.

FWIW I’m having with veal tongue with shallots in a basilicata pepper white wine butter sauce.

Bought from fass selections.

Smells of ripe cherries and plums, with a hint of earth. Fruity with a great dry finish. Glug Glug Glug, down the hatch. Pairs very nicely with Bernie Sanders and the DNC. — 9 years ago

Tasty juice, not overly complex but not going to kick it out of bed either. Hour after opening it holds up similar from popping the cork.

This fluorescent fruity translucent wine pairs with friends and quarantine. Having not left our fortified compound in 73 days this wine showed up at our ventilation hatch. A welcomed treat! — 6 years ago

$4.99 for a night of giggling and senseless rambling. Works for me. Sweet and light, I usually don't drink reds. I happened to buy a block of Beehive Cheese rubbed with Hatch Chile from Trader Joe's and it was so amazing together. I need to keep several bottles on hand. — 6 years ago

Tasted blind, you'd swear this was Burgundy: white pepper, white mushroom, vanilla, with a hint of citrus (grapefruit on the nose, lime on the finish), and the right amount of butter down the hatch. — 9 years ago

Château La Croix St. Georges

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

What a delicious and lovely nose this wine head. Silky smooth Merlot all of the way. Decanted and left it open for about 30 minutes and I’m not even sure it needed that. Firm with delicate flavors and just enough tannins for structure. Red and blue fruits with lavender and Rosemary notes. Drank this with short ribs that had been cooked sous vide for 24 hours with a red wine, hatch chili powder, salt, pepper, and onion marinade. Included with cream and garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed green beans. Lovely lovely wine. — 6 years ago

Domaine Roulot

Monthelie Pinot Noir 2004

Super smokey at first and I was perceiving this muted prune feel that really threw me off. Not sure what was going on. Kept drinking it in sort of a baffled and intoxicated state but eventually this went missing during the wedding party. I recovered it the next morning on a picnic table about a half mile away overlooking the Muir beach coast with about 1/6th left inside and no cork on it. Proceeded to cork it with a random and drive back to Long Beach with it. I drank it at this point about 32 hours after opening and it was righteous. Menthol and so much medicinal cherry cough syrup from the nose all the way down the hatch. Really serious juice but loving that unique character. Definitely a slow opener. 💥 — 9 years ago
