A straight up outstanding Canadian red. Bold, dark fruit notes, smooth and well balanced with that softer, more velvety mouthfeel you either love or hate in a Merlot. Prominent cherry, plum and blackberry with a hint of vanilla on the finish. Black Sage by Sumac Ridge in Summerland, BC continues to produce some of my favourite reds. This Merlot is as equally excellent as their Cab Franc. — 7 years ago

Deep ruby red with fine sediment. Nose is dark fruits mixed with spices herbs. A touch smoky with black pepper and a little forest floor as well. Moderate tannins (6/10) and medium bodied. A bit of heat at the back of the mid palate but dissipates with some air. Layered with dark fruits, a touch spicy, and a little bit of black olives. Finish still lingers with some damp leaves and earthiness. Drink till 2020. — 9 years ago

The Fiddlestix Vineyard is located at mile marker 7.28 on Santa Rosa Road in Lompoc, California, which is situated in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. In the mid-90's Kathy Joseph of Fiddlehead Cellars, along with the viticultural icon Taz Steinhauer, acquired the 133-acre, former flower farm, across Santa Rosa Road from the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard, and in 1998 they planted 100 acres of Pinot Noir. Aside from the small amount earmarked for Fiddlehead's own production, much of the vineyard is contracted to other producers, including Ampelos, Ancien, Anglim, Arcadian, Bonaccorsi, Dragonette, Jonata, Ken Brown, Hartley-Ostini Hitching Post, Gainey, Ortman, Pali, Paul Lato, Prodigal, RN Estate, Rusack, Summerland, Tyler, Vogelzang, Wedell , and TAZ, not to mention Etude.
Opens with an austere earth note in a tone reminiscent of Barbaresco, and in the words of Miles Raymond, it's "tighter than a nun's ass." 45 minutes later, though, and it's singing and juicy. Black cherry, but not overripe, leads this medium bodied, pungent thinker, while a virtual greenhouse of floral shades help twist and shape its direction. Secondary dusty earth and walnut skin reveal the source of its austerity. True to its terroir, there's a tertiary layer of spice and rocks that provides the depth needed to go from good to great. — 9 years ago
Must return to Summerland & taste again and stock up!😃 But this is the 2012 Zinfandel & I can't seem to edit it! — 10 years ago
Really enjoying. As a hotel room gift after a great day of wine tasting. Unmarked bottle other than 100% BC grown. My guess would be Cab Merlot. Medium plus body. Ripe cherries, dark chocolate and oak with a very smooth finish — 10 years ago
Fruit forward nose of raspberry and cherry. Nice weight and hint of barbecued cinnamon and smoked meat. Stands up nicely to a skirt steak. — 7 years ago
First time I have had anything from Haywire. Small.production facility well hidden off the main hwy in Summerland. Interesting facility with the philosophy of letting the fermentation and the wine speaks for itself. No oak used in their cellars but concrete barrels and clay. Juicy, aromatic..unlike most pinots I have had. Worth a try and dog friendly🐶😄 — 7 years ago

Nice blend red from a noce friendly winery in Summerland — 8 years ago

Call me whacked, but upon opening, this wine had a strong barbecue flavor. Later, we tasted blackberries, and minerals. Syrupy texture. — 9 years ago
Big buttery and viscous class of chardonnay. — 10 years ago
