Speak No Evil

Stone

India Pale Ale

I don't know what kind of evil voodoo sorcery is going on at Stone brewing, but these guys can't seem to put out a single bad ale. This is the most basic of their IPA selection. Very clean, simple and straightforward. No funky aftertaste and no smack you in the face crazy hoppiness. I suspect they are sacrificing chickens to some voodoo God, but I can't prove it. — 10 years ago

Dingač Plavac Mali 2010

Beautiful flavors of dried fruit. I haven't had a lot of Croatian wine before, but I really enjoyed this one! No tannin really to speak of. We found this went great with salty snacks in the evening. — 10 years ago

Fattoria Poggerino

Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2012

Amazing depth and clarity of fruit from nose to palate. Smells range from coffee-tar to mushroom mulch and black cherry au jus. Lovely cherry blossom notes intermingle with rose water. The tannins are big initially, but harmonize rapidly in the glass. The drying sensation in no way detracts from the fruit which is bright plum and melange of cherries including bing finishing with aloft raspberry pillow. The balance is there, the stony, schisty minerality, and the oak is perfect, allowing the wine to speak in all its elegant Chiantese! Muscle for the money!! Feed this beauty something earthy, beefy or both! — 10 years ago

En la Rue de Vergy Morey Saint Denis Pinot Noir 2012

I thought this was beautiful. The vineyard is in the NW corner of MSD. A little tight, but opened up nicely with a light decanting. Focused and clean. No Brett to speak of. — 10 years ago

Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona

Pianrosso Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 1997

Had this five years ago, where it was not ready for prime time but this one was if anything past prime. Still, fragrant aromas of tar, balsamico, dark cherry, no residual tannins to speak of. Just missing that edge and palate impact that the earlier bottle had. — 11 years ago

Château Certan-Marzelle

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend

This is the bottle that made me think I had a future in wine. It was a lonely bottle found in the basement that ended up in a flash sale to make room for restocking. I saw a nearly 10 year old French wine with a $9 sticker on it & thought "Either it's gross or they don't know what they have...either way, MINE!" When first poured I was disappointed - no nose to speak of & sediment, grr. I decanted it and took a shower. MOTHER OF GOD...it's amazing what a little bit of air can do. My partner, who isn't much for red wine couldn't believe how fragrant & smooth it was. We managed to keep from gulping it & enjoyed t across 2 dinners. I tried to find a case & the only one was auctioned through Christies! Ha! Sometimes you get lucky & this wine literally changed my life. — 10 years ago

Francis Blanchet

Cuvée Silice Pouilly-Fumé Sauvignon Blanc 2002

Interesting to sip a Pouilly Fumé Cuvée Silice from one of the most trusted values in the region at such an age. While she's in the repose of her twilight years she's not merely a beauty of a bygone time but instead lively and lovely whose company rewards whoever has a chance afternoon with her. Who would ever credit Sauvignon Blanc even one of this crystalline emerald variety as a wine that might take an age in a cool cellar? 13 years! Even through the crazing crows' feet these eyes shine brightly and despite how cray paper skin drapes over the cheek bones of Sauvignon Blanc, this is still nimble and pulses with lives yet to live -not merely memories to regale its audience of how things once were, what she once was or could have been. Honeycomb, lemon curd, nettles wilting in grassy green olive oil, and then the lime leaves...so familiar and yet always exotic of distant shores and climates so far from this northern land of four resolute seasons. As to ratings: how can any of us quantify sensual pleasures really. This was a joy no matter how you cut it and yet given my surprise at Sauvignon Blanc at 13 years on still having so much to say I cannot speak highly enough. The Blanchets do it again! — 10 years ago

Morgon Gamay 2013

Many other Beaujolais I've had smell like bubble-yum or bananas and have some weird, flatness, like club soda. Not burnt, but just, I don't know, like you're tasting the carbon. This is clean and direct. It's tart and sour-cherry, but mysteriously has almost no aftertaste. There's no oak flavor to speak of, (it's vinified in large-format neutral oak) but (once you let it develop) it still seems to have depth and richness like a wine that sees new oak. It needs about an hour of air for the acidity to calm down. — 10 years ago

McDougall Ranch Pinot Noir 2010

This wine is a beauty, with complex fruit and savory aromas and flavors. Sadly, and maybe it was just this bottle, but there was no real finish to speak of. Things came in beautifully but disappeared before the party was over. Glad I've got a few more bottles. It's too good not to be able to go the distance. Yeah, I'm an optimist. — 11 years ago

Napa Valley Merlot 2011

...out with the guys from Ft. Lauderdale on the water at... Well, I have no idea, but the view rocks... $19 wine on the menu for $48... Actually not bad at all... Shelly has a tie on that looks like he is about to go hunting... The horror, but I love Shelly... Awesome watching him speak to Katerina the Milanese model...
