A stunner from the very first sip. Maybe the best Poyeux I've ever had - up there with the best Rougeards I've had. Sophisticated and refined texture, feminine and satiny like a fancy Pomerol - even Burgundian in some moments - flowing with pure, ripe, red berry fruit that retains its classy figure and composure despite its piercing primary intensity. The flavors beyond the fruit are classic cabernet franc and a pure STGT of a Loire red, with a vivid snap of cracked black pepper and forestal brambliness. Earthy and yet clean, even slick and shiny. Many luxe Bordeaux would love to taste like this. — 10 years ago

Translucent, shiny, medium garnet red. Aromas emerge with medium intensity and complexity showing ripe bing cherry, roasted coffee bean, and graphite. A dry wine with excellent balance, medium acid, plush ripe tannin, medium body, high alcohol 14% is barely noticeable. The red fruit bursts open on the palate, fresh cherry, cranberry, tobacco leaf, slight bitterness. Medium concentration and medium plus length of flavor. shiny, densely colored blue black with an even concentration from the opaque core to a thin cranberry colored rim. Intensely aromatic with fresh ripe red berry fruit, strawberry compote layered with black pepper, graphite, waxy mulberry, and rosemary. A dry wine but fruit forward flavors leave a perception of sweetness. Round acidity creates just enough mouthwater to balance full body and medium viscosity. Medium plus dusty, forward moving astringency reveals a harmonious finish with medium complexity and concentration of candied cherry, rosemary, and black pepper. High alcohol 14.5% but viscosity and extract minimize the burn. — 12 years ago

Domaine Jean Chartron established in 1859 owns 13 hectares of vineyards - 16 appellations - 9 of which being in Puligny-Montrachet. The soil is a mixture of clay siliceous sand and lime components. 40 years the average age of the vines. Hand harvesting, neither herbicides, nor chemical pesticides are used in the vineyards. Behind the alchemical balance of the wine aging (élevage) in the woods, at the source of the new oak barrels there's always Allier and Vosges.
Even though 2011 in Burgundy's one of the most premature vintage in 300 years, I must admit that this bottle of the monopole Clos de la Pucelle was astonishingly crisp, persisten texture, a solid core of broom in bloom blowing up in your mouth, a shiny flow of mineral essence. Light, super fresh taste of forest strawberries and rose petals, enticing sweetness, smooth, aromatic, a very special festive wine. Lingering, warm, makes you want more. Pale ruby, this wine smells of smoked meats/bacon fat and garrigue slathered on wet cement. In the mouth the wine has a crystalline clarity with great acidity making flavors of raspberry and other forest berries bright and shiny, even as they take a back seat to a little barnyard funk and forest floor. Whereas the 2011 vintage of this was bright and shiny, this has a more glossy purple sheen to it. Coastal fruit aromas of red fruit with sweet sage. The palate is beginning to show the wines age, as the fruit isn't as lively, but that's probably more of a result of the grape not being able to age well. — 10 years ago

Intense deep apple and pear skin fruit over stones freshly-pulled from a stream. Bone dry and intensely minerally in the mouth. Really shiny acids make the long finish crisp. I'm not a huge fan of Chenin Blanc but even with that headwind I think this is very nice. — 10 years ago
