Poggio Antico

Riserva Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 1997

David T
9.3

On the nose, stewed, slightly sweet & sour cherries, strawberries, red licorice/cola, dry hay, soft, understated green pepper, loamy soils, limestone and bright red, fresh florals. The mouthfeel is lush, rich, round and still fresh. The tannins are soft and nearly completely resolved. It's right around it's peak 20 years down the road. Sweet & slightly sour cherries, poached strawberries, cranberry juice, strawberry licorice/cola, red fresh florals, soft, elegant limestone minerals, crushed dry rocks, dry stones, dry hay, suede style leather, round mouth watering acidity and a long elegant finish that lasts well over a minute. The owners are Giancarlo and Nuccia Glode. They purchased the winery in 1984. The Winemaker's are Alberto Montefiori & Paola Gloder. 80 acres of the estate are under vine. Of these, around 38 arces were planted in 70s and are in the process or have been replanted in order to accommodate more dense plantings. Oak use is new Slovenian oak barrels and 500 Liter French oak barrels. The two different sizes of barrels affect bouquet and tannin differently. Total production is 90-95,000 bottles or 7,700 cases. Photos of; the estate, large oak vats, tasting room and grounds. Beautiful property! — 7 years ago

Beautiful winery. They have a great selection of wines with reasonable prices.
I have been buying directly from them for the past several years.
A must visit when there.

@leon egozi Italy is my favorite country to visit and not just for the wine. Beautiful country, great food and of course, the wine doesn't suck either.

Riserva Rio Sordo Barbaresco Nebbiolo

From the great 2001 vintage. This vineyard is on the flatter country by the river where the soils are sandy. Slightly stinky nose - Fleshy palate. Great length. The full Nebbiolo package. A privilege. This was a fitting final wine in the Italian wine and Food Tour organised by Peter Scudamore-Smith MW and his wife Denise. Peter's contacts with the wineries and his depth of knowledge is exemplary. Together with the restaurants (a WOW List) and accommodation Peter and Denise provided an experience which exceeded expectations. We will be taking their Sicily trip in the next few years. Highly recommended to all Wine and Food lovers. Also this 2001 Rio Sordo was from the Produttori del Barbaresco. — 9 years ago

Langhe Nebbiolo 2013

This blew my socks off. Florality and light tar notes on the nose. Gorgeous perfectly ripe strawberries on the palate with a great tannin structure on the end. Drink this with pleasure while the Rio Sordo marinates in the cellar. — 9 years ago

Riserva Rabaja' Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2009

Since @Keith Crump opened a Rio Sordo I took out a Rabaja (thanks Keith for inspiring me 😁). It just kept me coming back for more. I adore those type of wines that suddenly make me forget about being "concious" what I'm drinking and make me realise it's just good! — 6 years ago

Rust showing on the rim... Crunchy red berry with hints of VA. Evergreen pine scent and a sultry black cherry round. Chi tea spice and ginger round out the nose. Fresh palate with juicy cherry transitions into mocha flavors. Finishes dry and with a delicious factor. With air this becomes more oxidative. Drink now. — 6 years ago

Paola has created a great Brunate in ‘14. Wines from here can be too heavy and intense, but here all’s in place. Impressive considering the vintage, offering tell tale varietal character. — 6 years ago

Ceretta Di Perno Barolo Nebbiolo 2012

At first I wasn't sure about this but after letting it air out a bit it's pretty good. Has scents of raspberry and cherry. Medium body. Very fruity taste. Paired it with stuffed chicken Marsala. I'm still trying to figure out a Barolo wine. This is my second but much better than the first! — 7 years ago
