Vineyard 29

Aida Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Somm David T
9.5

The 2015 was paired with “Braised Short Rib over Pomm Purée Dressed with Au Ju.”

Had to take speed notes on this one as we were running late to Outpost.

The nose shows beautiful ripe fruits of; dark cherries, blackberries, black raspberries, big plum, beautiful medium spice, beautiful baking spices, fresh violets and purple flowers.

The body is full and fresh. Tannins are soft and round. The structure & tension big. Well balanced. The acidity nice and round. The finish is beautiful elegant rich and even start to finish.

@Greg Ballington It was really cool. It really feels like a departure from Napa, or at least Napa today. And the wines match that feel.

One word. INSANE! I've heard all about Haber from @Shawn R and @Martin G Rivard and I'm more than pleased to say that their recommendations are totally spot on! Tonight was the Taste of Howell Mountain event in Dallas and the line-up was absurd. Aloft, Adamvs, Lamborn, Dunn, Outpost, O'Shaughnessy and many other rock stars. After tasting through many '13s and '14s, the '14 Haber Howell Mountain was the Wine of the night without a doubt. His '13 was great and when he said his '14 was excellent I thought it couldn't surpass it...it most definitely did. Buy this stuff up! The nose is out of this world...smoked meats, caramel, candied almonds. Jackpot! — 9 years ago

Viader

Napa Valley Red Blend 2011

Delia Viader is making wonderful Bordeaux style wines up on Howell Mountain (which is quickly becoming my favorite region...Dunn, ADAMVS, Arkenstone, Outpost...what's not to love?). She is a great inspiration to us all, and as you taste her wines, you can taste the brilliant acidity, firm tanins and the fruit is a early season strawberry and cassis. — 9 years ago

Scribe Outpost East Napa Valley Syrah

Baker Lane Vineyard(Field Guide 05), Bottle Numbers 1874 and 1879, Harvested 10/02/2014. Paired with a roast Alaskan Cod with Cannellini Beans and Castelvetrano olives, Roasted Broccoli, and Chocolate Gourmet Cannoli Cupcake. The food and wine complimented each, and the strong body of the wine brought out the hidden flavors and spices of the fish. Has a strong finish. Never ever adhere to old wives’ tale that only white goes with fish, as this meal clearly disapproves any notions. — 7 years ago

Château Bouscassé (Alain Brumont)

Vieilles Vignes Madiran Tannat

Dark and dense, but with a fresh line and earthy/bloody component nestled in the dark fruit and balanced oak. The flavor is of course driven by its lip smacking tannins, yet with a good fruit coverage which made them more approachable than expected. Modern winemaking in this rural outpost is the recipe for success. Nice performance — 7 years ago

Cresta Velia

Cabernet Sauvignon

Beautiful effort from John Giannini, TRB's assistant winemaker at Outpost. Loving thr '14's after a good 1.5 hr decant. Bright raspberry fruit transitions into stewed plums and cherries with warm baking spice. Love the story of this wine and the fact that this is 100% Howell Mtn fruit. 🙌 all around! — 8 years ago

Mending Wall

Palisades Vineyard Petite Sirah 2014

Black as midnight. So dark that you are afraid to spill any of it because it will stain more than grape Kool-Aid! As you swirl it in your glass, the high viscosity makes it seem like it is actually staining the glass. This is powerful stuff! Mending Wall is a great collaboration with Outpost owners (Frank and Kathy Dotzler), vineyard owners (Mark Pulido and Donna Walker) and bringing in spectacular winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown. This petite sirah comes from the Palisades Vineyard in Calistoga (considered one of the best). In just two sips, your tongue will be as purple as a Chow puppy's. Deep dark currant flavors and a long lingering finish. Come to the dark side and get your hands on this soon. They sell out very quickly. — 9 years ago

Don't think this is WEIRD. It reminds me of a combination of Dunn/Outpost !?! Lots of polished black fruits. Along with some muscle & elegance.
It's drinking window is now. Drink over the next 15/20 years! Edit... Could possibly be 96+ !

Preciado Wines

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2016

@Delectable Wine this is Preciado Cabernet 2016. Inaugural vintage released a few months ago. It was not in your database. Gemstone tasting graciously arranged by Al Buis tonight! I don't know if I should really be putting a number rating to this wine. Its best days are definitely ahead of it. This is a combination of coombsville, outpost, and gemstone Vineyard fruit. At the price this inaugural vintage fetches, this wine rates a 98. Reeling it back in, reality tells me that this is a 94 right now, which means that I feel this one should be able to go 10 years, but not entirely sure as it is extremely approachable now. I do believe it will age well for the first three to five years. It has a lot of sweet black fruit right on the opening. I was getting a little bit of molasses, chocolate in the middle, herbs toward the Finish. Very solid chalky youthful black backbone. Finishes with a lot of heft, and a lot of tannin. I recorked and took one bottle that had about 50 ml missing. I plan on opening that in 2 days to see how this develops. — 7 years ago

This is a 9.4 all day for me, with the possibility of increasing 1-2 points with additional bottle age. Brand new wine and an incredibly nice owner and winemaker behind it. The fruit (mainly blackberries and black cherry) is incredibly rich...fresh squeezed like. Dark chocolate, cinnamon, and cassis. Approachable with a short decant. Lights out for $60!

Château L'Eglise-Clinet

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 1994

One of the hottest restaurants in town, Saturday night, the week before Cara's birthday: all the makings of a delightful date night.

Rarely is chicken king but at Le Coq Rico that's very much the case. Antoine Westermann apparently spent years trying to find the perfect chicken before he was comfortable opening the New York outpost of his famed Parisian poultry eatery. The Brune Landaise is indeed a beautiful bird, heavy on the white meat yet utterly succulent and flavorful. Anyone eating at Le Coq Rico should also try the extraordinary slow cooked eggs to start and end with I'ile Flottante, a perfectly spherical soft meringue floating in a sea of rich crème anglaise. Indulgent and divine.

I brought a 1994 L'Eglise Clinet, which I picked up a few years ago. Apparently this wine is considered a standout in an otherwise difficult vintage. Supple and right at its peak, this medium bodied Bordeaux has hints of cherry and tar that evolves beautifully on the palate. (Corkage is $50 per 750ml, max two per table.)

Sodhani

St. Helena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Somm David T
9.5

Dark tary cassis, blueberries, stewed plums, black raspberries, dry floral bouquet, herbs, milk & dark chocolate, coffee grounds and underbrush on the nose. The fruits melt in your mouth upon entry. The fruits are full and round. Blackberries, dark cherries, blueberries, dry plum and ripe slightly juicy raspberries. There is a strong sense of dark barrel toast as I taste a fair amount of sawdust & baking spices. This couldn't have been in bottle very long. Mocha power & milk chocolate follow. Then, herbs dominated by sage, dry coffee grounds, dry dusty brown soil with crushed volcanic rocks, graphite, leather, dry florals. Tannins are still chewy. It's such a baby. This wine has all makings of a cult Cabernet. It's has great structure, length balance and nice acidly. However, It shouldn't be opened for 10+ years. Its so young, It's hard to score this wine higher than 95 but certainly has the all makings of a 95+. Sodhani's winemaker is Thomas River Brown has made 8x 100 point wines in his career. He's made wine for; Outpost, Turley, Schrader, Maybach, Aston Estate, Vieux-Os & Double Diamond. It's certainly worth keeping an on this very young estate. 2013 was their first vintage. Notes from a Coravin tasting.
