Rinconada Vineyard Pinot Noir 2012

I dunno. Pretty quiet overall and specifically flat in the mid palate. Root day? Odd spot? I mean, the tart red fruit I expect is there, there's just no dynamic range. — 9 years ago

Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Chardonnay 2009

Frankly: I am surprised at how dynamic and Mâcon this is at 6+ years! It was said and chirpy as only wines with dry extract can be. Delicious with roasted potato leek soup -especially in this odd season between an Indian Summer and that penetrating November rain. Great tension here. — 10 years ago

Arboreus Umbria IGT Trebbiano

2009. Deep golden, almost brownish hue. Some odd aromas (black olive?) on opening, but was beautiful after a 2-3 hour decant. $62 from Astor Wines, New York. — 10 years ago

Domaine du Pegau

Cuvée Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend

Now the 2007 Pegau... Earthy red berry, 'meaty', (almost) dried roses, incense... Subtle yet powerful (I know it sounds odd) :) — 12 years ago

Clos Saint Jean

La Combe des Fous Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2005

Evokes an 80's Mike Tyson, powerful, primary, possibly destined for greatness but creating a fear that unnerves. Appropriately, it socks the nose, cloves, kirsch, leather. Assaults the palate, huge extraction that manages to float, coffee, dark chocolate. Compote left out for a day. Would love to taste this next to any SQN Grenache of similar age...Group was confounded but, like 80s Iron Mike, agreed that it's destined for fame or despair, but will always be interesting. — 9 years ago

Odd field blend. Unusual flavors. A bit funky to begin, but it developed with air time. A bit of prunishness. — 10 years ago

Henriot

Brut Rosé Champagne

Man oh man this knocked my socks off. Reminded me of an authentic Lambic from Belgium, with funky and earthy aromas of mushroom and rancid lemon (in a good way). On the palate, black cherry fruitiness is bright, yet restrained, and taken over by notes of bread crust, cedary oak, earthy lees (yeast), dusty bookshelf, black pepper, hibiscus with a fully dry, crisp mouthfeel along with aggressive yet elegant carbonation. Out-performs it's price-point. 4.5 — 9 years ago

Rockburn

Central Otago Pinot Noir 2012

2012 - outstanding aromas of curry spice and dark berry fruit, really seductive. Odd then that the palate doesn't quite follow through, there's plenty of fruit but it's a little lean and the strong jasmine tea notes in the tannins are just out of balance. Could be indicative of the 2012 vintage, even the Akarua from that year was not mind blowing. Still a very fine effort, I could happily sit sniffing away at the glass for hours. $47.95 at LCBO — 10 years ago

Les Domaines Paul Mas

What a delightful wine from Southern France. This used to be one of the most widely planted grape varietals, but feel out of favor in the late 80's. Glad to see that Paul Mas did not give up on it. With a nose of blackberries, vanilla and slate; an inky purple hue and a mouthful of flavors that will knock your socks off, this is a really nice wine! — 10 years ago
