Boroli

Barolo DOCG Nebbiolo 2011

Christy Canterbury MW
9.0

Impressively delicate and accommodating vis a vis the many furiously hard Nebbiolo out there from 2011. Crunchy rhubarb, green strawberries, chipped slate. — 10 years ago

Donkey & Goat

Helluva Vineyard Pinot Noir 2012

Black raspberry, citrus curd, pie crust on the nose. Vibrant acidity. Bright black fruit on the palate, almost effervescent mouthfeel. A little one sided vis a vis the acid-tannin balance, but with age I think that will fade. — 11 years ago

Lions Peak

Vis A Vis Red Blend

Vanilla butter and olive oil on the nose this is a fantastic wine for the price point. Tart red fruit on the tongue Plum and dry black fig on the finish. Pretty big. — 11 years ago

Bodegas y Vinedos O. Fournier (Ortega Fournier)

— 10 years ago

Burgo Viejo

Crianza Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2010

A nice Rioja that is nice on the pallets with soft, almost buttery finish notes and a nice bouqet. Easy to drink and presents well with a good meal. Some folks think of flamingo dancers when they think of Spain - I only think of Rioja and the great grapes coming from an often overlooked region via a vis its famous neighbour to the north. — 11 years ago

Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild-Vega Sicilia

Macán Rioja Tempranillo 2009

This wine had such clear and transparent red fruit--specifically it had flashes of fresh red plum that were just stunning. With a lighter, finessed structure (at least vis a vis the earlier Cabernet blends...), this wasn't short on anything. — 10 years ago

Louis Latour

Les Referts Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Chardonnay 2008

I don't typically buy / have anything to do with Louis Latour wines, but this was a quite generous gift. This showed impressively at first, but then the finish seemed to fall apart after a couple hours open and become disjointed a bit; a layer of lemon over here; some acidity here; some wood spice oaky layers in this corner over here somewhere behind a vaguely Meursault-like salinity. If only these heavily-etched elements could integrate somehow. Maybe with time this will happen to this wine. I'm not going to complain given the price I paid, but hey, something about the Louis Latour brand seems a bit mass-produced and flaky. Gets fresh fishy, saccharine and minty. Perhaps I am being unfair because of my skepticism vis à vis the Latour brand. Although, in 08, if you can't put together a marvelous 1er cru Puligny you just gotta pack your bags, I'd think. — 12 years ago
