Preparing for our adventure to Portugal Surdyks’ Recommendation:
(Douro) Portugal is a prolific wine country, best known for its sweet dessert wine - Port. World famous in its many styles, Port is sweet and fortified, prized for its rich flavors and lush texture. Portugal also has fabulous dry red wine. Dow’s “Vale do Bomfim” is made with the same grapes and sourced from the same historic Douro Valley that produces Dow’s great Ports. Portugal’s indigenous grapes – Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinto Cão – are names that should pique your interest and draw you to this imported discovery. Picked by hand and manually sorted with great care, the grapes are fermented in small vats. The resulting wine has complexity and style. Portugal’s Douro Valley has consistently good climate and growing conditions almost every year. The flavors are dynamic and the tannic structure is soft and silky. This is a really good wine for all occasions, with an affordable price and value.

94+ Louis martini killing it recently. This seems richer than the 12. While the Alexander valley is a soft lush wine with great flavor, this monte Rosso brings a punch of structure (this needs time). The Alexander valley (I gave it 93pts) is a hugeeeee value but the monte Rosso delivers for the price as well. Great sub-100 cab from a historic vineyard. I need to compare this to the lot 1. I've preferred this over the lot 1 in the past but I haven't opened my 2012 and 100 pt 2013 lot 1. — 8 years ago

Established in 1861 as the first winery in the Napa Valley by Prussian-born Charles Krug. Today the winery remains under the stewardship of the Peter Mondavi Sr Family, who purchased the historic winery in 1943. A blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, 1% Merlot, dark red with ripe dark berry scents and sweet spice. On the palate sweet blackberry and cherry flavors with leather and cacao notes. Firm tannins are a bit tight but opened up by the time the bottle was empty. — 8 years ago
Jack and Jamie Davies revived the historic vineyards and cellars in 1965, with a mission to produce California's first world-class sparkling wines. Today, led by their son Hugh, continues with this commitment to quality. A 100% Chardonnay, straw yellow with aromas of stone and citrus fruits, with floral scents. A terrific sparkler shows crisp green apple, orange and grapefruit zest. A medium-bodied, wine with a great mousse, tiny bubbles and nice length on the finish ending with some crisp mineral notes. — 9 years ago
Another 19th century resurrected style by the Rare Wine Co., made by Beirbeto in Madeira. True to its Rainwater style, can pair w any cheese or nut. Outstanding historical drink. #Strawhat — 10 years ago

Almost new-world Meursault. Ordinarily, under any other circumstances, very good, but exceptional for $35. — 7 years ago
