Robert Young Estate Winery

Big Rock Block Cabernet Franc 2013

Really still not able to be rated right now but would be solid at 94 (previous rating given here). This wine is so young that it was finally starting to show its character after being open for an hour and a half....but overall, still locked up. Nose on this wine is hawthorne, rose petal, and red fruits. The wine is medium bodied, red fruit dense, medium acidity to the middle, and finishes with anise and red clay notes among a floral and youthful red berry backbone. The proper thing to do with this wine is cellar it for another 5 years. Considering that I've now consumed 9 of 12 bottles purchased, that's not going so well. Will go another 10 years with ease. — 7 years ago

La Cuvée du Chêne Texas High Plains Petit Verdot 2015

2015 Chene Petit Verdot..... Best bottle of Texas wine I've ever had. This bottle pours a dark purple color into the glass. Nose is lavender, hawthorne, cinnamon and plum. Black tarry color. The entry reveals a FULL BODIED wine. Dark, black plum, earthy, black fruit, red apple cinnamon spice with plum tart overlay. Finishes dark with mint and acidity and youthful oak tannin that is ABUNDANT. This wine is THICK. The acidity from start to finish is quite high which pretty much just tells me that this wine's best days are STILL ahead of it. This glass was enjoyed from Coravin, so I can only imagine how amazing it would be with a 4 hour decant. WOW. Drink 2020-2030. — 7 years ago

@Jason Oliver : As Mark mentioned above, CL Butaud Tempranillo is a great TX wine. Made by Randy Hester who makes the wines for Lightning Wines (at Brasswood).

What a better way to end a semester of studies than with my favorite red-skinned beauty. Hawthorne for days... Graphite, juicy acidity, fresh red fruit, raspberry leaf. May I please marry it. — 10 years ago

Rutherford Red Blend 2008

This wine is in a perfect spot right now. After about an hour and a half of air, it was singing. Nose with hawthorne and a little red fruited. Entry was more dirty dusty blackberry. Middle shows the meaty, earthy, red clay side with a really dense and somewhat dark finish. Rutherford dust VERY present here. I just love how these wines age. — 7 years ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Franc 2010

This wine is a solid 95 even still, and has 96 potential in the next year when it will be a pop and pour wine. This is a hawthorne and jasmine, purple, black and blue fruit, earth and brambly cabernet franc that takes no prisoners. A full bodied wine from start to finish, this one has a nose of wildflowers, blueberry and brambleberry. The entry is dark, full bodied, still a touch acidic and a touch sweet with a blue/black/purple dark entry, giving way to a touch of petrol in the middle. Darker finish actually, dusty black fig and blackberry with a hint of fruitcake spice. Still a bit tannic as well when served PNP, but backed off after 30 minutes in the glass (enjoyed via Coravin). Still has 5-7 years left -- immense structure to this wine. — 7 years ago

@Shay A apparently we were both in the mood for Cab Franc last night. Have many bottles of a vertical going all the way back to 2008! I think a cab franc blind tasting is in our future! Might not be a bad idea to see if we can make it a part of the next fourth Friday event

Aubert

UV Vineyard Pinot Noir 2009

This one was opened alongside a 2006 Aubert Reuling, and in all honesty this one was thicker, deeper, and more 'youthful' although this one really was showing some secondary notes too. The nose of this wine showed dirty raspberry, clove, and entered with a much more 'full bodied' expression. Hawthorne and lily. The middle of this wine seemed as though it wanted to go darker, but never did. I think that the best drinking time for this wine was likely 2016-17, although there is likely to be a bit of bottle variation at this point. — 7 years ago

I’m giving this and the ‘06 the same score though both were very different. This was still quite powerful (though not in Bevan’s realm). Lots of acidity and rhubarb, raspberries and cherry tart. Young, and has a good bit of life ahead. This is a great expression of Cali Pinot in a prime drinking window.

Cimarossa

Rive di Cimarossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Showing the tiniest bit of oxidation at first, with a rather strange funk. This one has a classic volcanic soil nose and when it was bottle decanted it still had a 70's shag carpet funk to it. This quickly blew off. The terroir note of the red volcanic soil is still present throughout the entire presentation of this wine. This one shows blackberry that has started to show the tiniest bit of age. From front to back, this one was blackberry and volcanic soil with some lavender and hawthorne. Finished still with some tannin, so I know this one has at least another 5-10 years to go. Tasted very similar to a Barnett Rattlesnake Hill which, to me, was WOTN. — 8 years ago

Cimarossa is becoming that coy and shy girl that you kind of appreciate not getting much attention from her because it makes you more invested, and in return, hope it pays off. These wines are so intriguing to me. You can tell they are so well made. This 2010 is still pretty bold and needs time. Nose was a bit muted at first but came around with that ashy/smoky, dusty fruit that I get from mountain cabs, especially Howell. Very red and black fruit focused with some spice to the finish. That Mountain fruit power and elegance is there. Thanks @Mark Flesher !
