Sangiacomo Family Vineyards Chardonnay 2015

Waited to get home to try this one. The last bottle was corked. This bottle, not nearly so much! After the last bottle was corked, this bottle was opened the next night. Poured a light straw color. Nose of lemon and herbed buttered popcorn. The entry was acidic and dominated by lemon and Asian pear. Middle of this wine is where the buttered popcorn and kernel notes kicked in. The wine finishes rather acidic, but with good weight and density. I still think this one has quite a few years left in it. The next one to drink is the last 2013 for sure. Drink or hold this one another 3 to 5 years. — 8 years ago

@Hugh O'Riordan agreed! Their Cabernet Franc tends to be our favorite, however their straight Cabernet Sauvignon with seven or eight years of age will really blow you away. My wife calls them the best kept secret in Rutherford, even though they are right off the Silverado Trail! :-)

This had a eucalyptus thing going on that I alternated between liking and disliking, but this has otherwise aged pretty well, much better than other Delilles from the era I have tried. — 11 years ago

Antica Terra

Estate Grown Pinot Noir 2009

Fantastic pinot from Maggie Harrison at Antica Terra. Classic aromatics with scents of dried cherries, rhubarb, hints of pine, and some great earthy undertones. The palate is rich but elegant at the same time, with great acidity but plenty of fruit to keep it on balance through a lingering finish. I am absolutely convinced that high-end Oregon pinots need several years in the cellar to integrate, then it just sings. Awesome. — 9 years ago

California Roussanne 2014

Excellent roussanne from Maggie Harrison at Antica Terra. Nose has great notes of honeysuckle and other aromas that I can only describe as classic roussanne (because I’m just not good enough to ascribe aromatics). The palate has a terrific oily character to it, but was dominated by primary, relatively unevolved flavors. Still really good, but I suspect this is going to get so much better with a few more years in the bottle. Let it sit. — 9 years ago

A little harder because it was with food (paired great with the grilled chicken, Cesar salad, and artichoke) and chocolate (another good pairing). Oaky on the nose and palate, but in a good way. Cherry. — 10 years ago

Rutherford Red Blend 2005

One of the first Napa wines I ever purchased (I'm a late bloomer). Bottle #171 of 3840 of the 2005 William Harrison Rutherford Red is deep garnet in color. The mouthfeel is dense. This wine still has great fruit - black cherry front and mid-palate and tart red cherry on the finish - but intertwined with tertiary flavors, most noticeably mint and leather. Good tannin structure remains, although much softer than when I tasted this in 2009. I'm drinking this to celebrate the fourth anniversary of my website. — 11 years ago

Rutherford Rosé of Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Umm... yeah..... so the last one of these I had didn't seem to be THIS good. I'd incite a riot if I gave this one what I really wanted to give. What a massive bouquet and palate of strawberry puree, crushed rock, pomegranate. Not too acidic. Rather full and viscous for a Rose.....aaaaand it's my last as well. — 8 years ago

Piedrasassi

Harrison Clarke Vineyard Red Blend

This is a 50 50 blend of Syrah and mourvedre, the latter of which was added because it doesn't ripen as quickly, a problem the growers ran into growing Syrah on their soil.

It's a very dark, opaque, purple wine. The aroma is full, raspberry, tar, rose petals, vanilla. It's really tasty, chalky and b vitamins (which I like), bright, broad tannins (if that's a thing).

Bandol Mourvedre Blend 2013

I had this in honor of one of my favorite writers, Jim Harrison, who passed a few weeks back. He loved this wine and I haven't had it enough to love it. However, this time was a real eye-opener. Super funky nose upon opening, like leather and barnyard. But it opened up, and the first sip had a lot more black fruits with just that underlying funk. Turned out two hours in a decanter did this wine some justice. Complex and enjoyable, stood up to a porterhouse, enough fruit to make it immediately satisfying but with so much more going on. Tannins relatively light. — 10 years ago

Rutherford Cabernet Franc 2009

Upon opening i felt it had too much alcohol. This was a misperception. After giving it a half an hour to breathe it balanced out very well. The nose is heavy black currant and bell pepper with creamy vanilla lingering. Great fruit in here lots of over ripe stewed blackberry and dried black currant and dark cherry notes. Slightly smokey with amazing oak flavors. Cinnamon and other baking spices with intense vanilla flavors. Excellent effort. — 12 years ago
