We enjoyed an amazing dinner in his home this evening and opened these 2 beauties. Becklyn Reserve and a private propriety blend called "M" by Ted Mandes.
I opened and reviewed the Becklyn Reserve last night as well. You all know how I felt about it. Extremely solid and I rated accordingly. My opinion hasn't changed. It's an awesome wine. Thanks again David for introducing me to this Beauty!! — 7 years ago

I uncorked this one since it had been such a reliable pour the last time I opened it. However, in New York it had disappointed all of us. I am back to being disappointed. This is the type of bottle that you have to open by itself and not showcase it against any other as it will swiftly retreat into the shadows. Light on the palate, super short finish. This bottle came in dead last tonight. I can't believe the other that I opened impressed me that much that night. I don't do this often but I will knock it down to an 8.9. — 7 years ago

1959 Auslese for how much?! There is something truly unique and precious about a wine that has never left its place of origin... it's what some call provenance.
This now defunct #Rheingau estate was at this time on top of its game and produced some of the finest #Rieslings from #GrandCru vineyard sites in #Eltville and #Kiedrich. Eltviller #Kalbspflicht Riesling #Auslese from Jacob Fischer Erben was so fresh and lively that the closet guess was 1976!
Where else can you find such a phenomenal wine from an awesome year that is pushing 60 years of age for $250 in a restaurant???

I was first introduced to this wine by @Carl Fischer back in Oct over dinner. It caught the attention of many that night, It is still captivating. Refined, sleek and elegant. Blackberry and kirsch fill the nose. I can’t get over the sweet tannins-full bodied and bold yet smooth and defined. @Carl Fischer thank you for recommending - love it - decanted for 2 hours - had me at hello - color was hypnotizing - watching swirl in the glass was deep thought provoking "yeahs" thoughts

Taste is so inviting - big time jammy - dark black and blue everything - throw in the right spice and some chocolate mocha and the palette begins to speak - complex but simple - structured but balanced - it simply works

The nose is what is keeping me from dancing - just a little less than I would have hoped which tells me it will get better as it ages in the bottle

The finish was long and powerful - love it and will last 10 years but definitely can drink now with right decant

My cab franc binge continues, and this one ranks among the best Cab francs I've ever had. @Carl Fischer and I are "cab franc nerds" (a smaller group of the Wine Nerd Herd crew 😂), and we agreed to introduce each other to our favorite cab francs. This was my first from his batch and I wonder if the bar is now set too high! If I had to summarize this wine, it would be that everything is in sync. All the pieces feel well aligned and brought together appropriately. Initially, I want to talk about the nose...that oiled leather, pepper, currants and vanilla, but then I go back to the beautiful acidity, texture, medium bodied, rush of blackberries, plum and floral notes. I keep going back and forth. Feel like that's the signature of a great wine...you can't decide which component is your favorite. @Pam Starr , this is a beautiful wine. Carl, you are off to a hot start my friend. Looking forward to seeing how the Detert shows! — 7 years ago

@Carl Fischer Christine knew that we would all get along as soon as you walked in with this beauty in New York earlier this year!!! It's one of her favorites!!! Truly A phenomenal example of a great Napa cab. This is firing on all cylinders. I still have a dozen left in my cellar and can't wait to see the evolution that they will take in the next 15 years. Winner, winner chicken dinner! Great minds think a like Carl! LOL we must've had 60 bottles of wine that night and I still remember Christine saying "I really like that wine" when you walked in the door with that bottle! Medium ruby core with garnet edges. Aged characteristics on the nose with damp earth, a little espresso, a touch smoky, cinnamon and stewed plums. Medium tannins (6/10) and plus medium body. Dark cocoa on the attack of the palate intermingled with plums, black currants, black cherries and lots of spices. A bit of anise and the Petit Verdot coming through in the medium plus finish. Drink till 2018.

So I believe this Sunshine Vineyard is from the Wappo Hill portion of the Hartwell Estate......sorry now this portion belongs to the Realm Cellars estate. Medium to deep garnet red with bricking on the edges. Stinky and savory on the nose straight from the get go. Opened up over the next half hour or so with stoney notes, a touch smoky and soft red cherries. Well integrated and smooth, moderate tannins (6/10). Beautiful aged characteristics on the palate with notes of dusty black cherries, a touch of chalk and dust, mushrooms, truffles, and also gains some aged red cherries. Medium plus body with a super long finish. This bottle has aged very well. Drink now if you like power in your Cabernet but this will keep for few more years. Drink till 2020. — 7 years ago

One of my favorite dinners was on the menu here at Chez Skip - cassoulet! And my knowledge of wine pairing is as sophisticated as a toddler eating spaghetti, I said to myself - hey I am eating French food and I like this French wine, so hey why not? And that was that. But as wine can be, it evoked its memory of when I had it first. I remember sitting out in the patio and being impressed with it. I thought to myself I could really enjoy French wines, but as history has shown, that was clearly a short lived notion.

Knowing it had been some time, I had an odd feeling, so I checked my Delectable history. Indeed, this was the very first wine I had rated!
