Irrewarra Chardonnay

Brought this to Adrian’s house for dinner. Oaky, vanilla, butter, stone fruits, mineral and slight acid at the end. — 5 years ago

Château Léoville Poyferré

Saint Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

Delectable Wine
9.7

The 2010 Léoville-Poyferré has a very intense bouquet with blackberry, briary cedar and light estuarine/seaweed aromas that are very well defined. Pure class. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, layers of pure black fruit laced with pencil lead and a pinch of white pepper. It fans out wonderfully towards the finish, a Saint-Julien demonstrating wonderful density and precision. What an outstanding wine, perhaps less flamboyant than other vintages, one that will last decades. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. (Neal Martin, Vinous, April 2020)

Château Figeac

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

Delectable Wine
9.7

The 2010 Figeac has a youthful and exuberant bouquet with black cherries, boysenberry, cassis and violets that soar from the glass. There is no stopping the aromatics here. The palate is rich and sensual on the entry with precocious red fruit laced with blood orange and cedar. It firms up a little towards the structured finish that exerts fine grip and there is real persistence in evidence. This is a very classy 2010 Right Bank, this bottle showing even better than the example at BI Wines & Spirits a few days earlier. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. Sangreal Pinot Noir 2009

Perfumed berries on the nose. Light berries (raspberry, strawberry) come to the fore in a gentle way but with enough structure and length ensuring the flavour doesn't dissipate. Really nice. — 9 years ago

Geelong Chardonnay 2013

Straw gold in colour, peach and butterscotch on the palate; the fruit, oak and acid in perfect balance with a beautiful mouthfeel. A lovely wine and would reward another couple of years in the cellar. 92 pts. — 10 years ago

Philippa Farr

Mornington Pinot Noir 2017

Stellar. Explodes out of the glass. Raspberry, plum, definitely some darker fruits here like currants which I don’t normally find in pinot. Sultry and seductive in a make eye contact across the room way. Moves into like a rose petal arena with just a hint of black pepper. 25% whole bunch and it shows texturally. Really good wine — 5 years ago

Château Lafleur

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

Delectable Wine
9.8

The 2010 Lafleur is showing a lot of Cabernet Franc on the nose. It is supremely well defined with incredibly clarity and terroir expression. You could almost mistake it for a Left Bank. Figeac? The palate is precise and detailed, touches of burnt toast and white pepper sprinkled over the persistent and structured finish that does not miss a step. Brilliant. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

Delectable Wine
9.6

The 2010 Ducru-Beaucaillou has a seriously fine bouquet with plenty of black fruit, cedar and hints of camphor that blossom from the glass. So much vigour and intensity here, yet it remains beautifully delineated and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain, supple tannins. There is a fine bead of acidity, fresh and focused, one of the most pliant Saint-Julien crus in this flight with a supple finish that belies that structure underneath. It reminds me of Léoville Poyferré. Superb. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. (Neal Martin, Vinous, April 2020)

Château Trotanoy

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2008

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2008 Trotanoy is a ferociously backward Pomerol that did not engage at Farr’s horizontal. Another bottle served over lunch that had undergone a long decanting was far more representative. It has a gorgeous bouquet with raspberry and menthol, a little dark chocolate and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with ample freshness and vigor although it clearly demands a long aeration to really click into fifth gear. This is a multi-dimensional Trotanoy that probably needs another couple of years in bottle. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 10-Year On tasting. (Neal Martin, Vinous, May 2018) — 7 years ago

Gippsland Pinot Noir 2013

A big and sumptuous Pinot with all the hallmarks of Gippsland. For me, lacks the acid line to clean up the big fruit. I like the wine, it's Central Otago like in that it's bigger and firmer..... But for me it's got a ways to go before it's great. — 10 years ago

Vieux Château Certan

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

Delectable Wine
9.7

The 2010 Vieux Château Certan has a more modern bouquet compared to its peers. There is plenty of high quality new oak that slightly masks the fruit, although it does not overwhelm and should be completely subsumed with bottle age. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. This is very well balanced, though I would have liked a little more substance and grip on the finish. Very fine and classy, but maybe it could have been better? Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. (Neal Martin, Vinous, April 2020)

Château La Violette

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

Delectable Wine
9.6

The 2010 La Violette has a well-defined bouquet with predominantly red fruit laced with scorched earth, leather and just a touch of cassis in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with a grippy entry. This has fine backbone, perhaps a good deal of Cabernet Franc in the blend. Very expressive towards the finish and extremely persistent. A class act that is just beginning to show what it is capable of. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. (Neal Martin, Vinous, April 2020)

Bass Phillip

Premium Gippsland Pinot Noir 2008

Mid crimson in colour with pale tinges. A brilliant perfumed nose with Cherries Stalks and a vegetal note. Palate staining intensity with a finish that goes On and On. An amalgam of flavours. I have often written on Delectable that this is Australia’s Best Pinot Noir producer and a wine like this just reinforces that view. Every now and again you will have a marvellous Bindi, By Farr, Yabby Lake or the many great Pinot’s coming from Tasmania but for consistency it has to be Bass Phillip. In summary whether you like the Old World or New World this is gorgeous Pinot Noir. — 6 years ago

Bannockburn

Geelong Pinot Noir 2003

12 year old Pinot. From the start I'm shaking my head. The cherry nose is unbelievably strong. Sweet cherry nose - one of the most amazing smells I've ever had. Strong alcohol for a Pinot 13.5%. Flavours are over-powering - strongly over-powering - cherry - acid still there and a long longer. So unexpected - Gary Farr - hats off and bowing - how do you do this? I think this is amazing! Personally a little more subtle would get a better rating from me - 3/7/9 = 19.5 out of 100 = 93 — 10 years ago

Cherry was too over powering for me. That too sweet to have anymore came over me. Great that it held the nose and robust flavour for that long though.
