de Trafford

Elevation 393 Red Blend 2007

This Stellenbosch Cabernet blend gets its name from being 393 metres above sea level. Deep Ruby in colour. Aromas of coal dust, liquorice, Tomato Bush, Capsicum and stalky green Notes. On the palate initial impressions were lacking in fruit. More austere than expected. Certainly very different to most Napa Valley Cabernets that I’ve had. Medium bodied. I bought this wine in 2012 at the cellar door and it was quite the trek to drive to de Trafford over many dirt roads. One of the 1001 wines. — 6 years ago

Robert Keenan Winery

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

From high in the Mayacamas Range, at elevation of 1,700 feet, lies Spring Mountain and the Robert Keenan Winery. Cab Sauv sourced, 73% from Spring Mountain and 27% from Pope Valley. Dark opaque Ruby with aromas of red fruits, oak, smoke, sweet herbs and spice. On the palate black raspberry and blackberry flavors with notes of tobacco, cacao and espresso. Fine dusty tannins, satisfying acidity on complex long smooth finish ending with sweet oak tones. Nice! Drink now! — 5 years ago

Celler Piñol

Mather Teresina Seleccion de Vinas Viejas Terra Alta Red Blend 2012

Had this 2 yrs ago. Mather Teresina, flagship wine of Celler Vinos Piñol, made with grapes grown in high elevation region of Terra Alta. The nearly extinct Morenillo grape is indigenous to the area & makes Mather Teresina a unique wine, a blend of 50% Garnacha, 30% Cariñena & 20% Morenillo. Nice aromas of berries & sweet spice. On the palate cherry flavors with vanilla spice adding pepper notes on fine smooth tannins which opened much quicker. Long ending with sweet fruit tones & bits of earthy floral. — 5 years ago

Bricco delle Viole Barolo Nebbiolo 2012

Clearly the winner of day one, from a high-elevation hamlet in the commune of Barolo, this shows the "feminine" side of Barolo, and not at all lacking for guts or complexity — 8 years ago

Finca Decero

Remolinos Vineyard Malbec 2013

3500' elevation. My favorite of the three Malbecs. Rich, dark fruit, intertwines with mocha, violets, and caramel. A silky mouthfeel and a simply delicious factor put this over the top for the win. — 8 years ago

Cirq

Treehouse Vineyard Pinot Noir 2012

2012 CIRQ Estate Treehouse Pinot Noir. Michael Browne’s (of Kosta Browne) personal project which as I understand is an homage to the Summers he spent at a ‘Circus Camp’ in his youth. Treehouse is an amazing hilltop (stunning elevation) property in west Sonoma County with red, iron-rich soil surrounded by (say what?) coastal cypress trees. I had the pleasure of visiting, hosted by Damon Wong, and it's an amazing Vineyard. Unlike anything else I've ever seen. I can understand Michael's fascination with it. The wine: On the nose, red fruits, cedarbox, with notes of rhubarb and fennel. On the palate, pomegranate, kirsch, black tea, spices, roasted herbs along with hints of black truffles and white pepper. Beautiful texture. Lengthy finish. Classic expression of Pinot Noir. If I had to distinguish it from Kosta Browne from a flavor-perspective, I would say higher acidity and a bit of tannin give it a quality more accustom to Grand Cru Burgundy which is not bad company. I'm a fan. Congrats to Michael as well as his partner in this project, my friend Kenny Rochford, one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. — 8 years ago
