Chateau Petit Goujon

Opus One

Overture Napa Valley Petit Verdot Blend

Opus One – Overture Red Blend N/V 🍷
A symphonic second wine by Opus One, this multi-vintage blend (2014, 2015, 2016) was acquired in 2019, right before the shift toward vintage-specific releases like the 2021 onwards.

Crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, this bottle reflects Napa’s grandeur with flexibility in blending and extended time in barrel, allowing for elegance, depth, and harmony to shine through.

👃 Aromatics open with expressive layers of ripe cherry, red currant, and a fresh, youthful lift of red fruit.
👄 On the palate: a beautifully rounded texture, woven with earthy cocoa, mahogany, and subtle vanilla. Silky tannins and a graceful structure speak of its extra time in oak, building toward a soft yet persistent finish.

Overall mouthfeel: Plush, polished, and deeply enjoyable. The structure and spice make it ideal for grilled meats, braised dishes, or contemplative sipping.

A timeless expression, not just a second label, but a well-composed tribute to the artistry of Mondavi & Rothschild, and a celebration of Napa’s capacity to age with finesse. 🥂

Purple Angel Colchagua Valley Carménère Petit Verdot 2021

Inky dark color. Tomato leaf, coffee, and mint on the nose. More pyrazine notes on the palate along with cocoa, cranberry, leather, black pepper, molasses, raisins, coffee, tobacco, and dark cherry. High acid, high alcohol, medium plus tannins, medium plus body, and long finish. Despite all the tertiary notes, drinks vibrant and fresh. Drink now or hold. — 4 months ago

Quimera Mendoza Malbec Blend 2021

A blend of Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot, aged in French oak 65% new and 35% 1 year old, fruit sourced from Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley. Deep Ruby with aromas of dark fruit, earthy and floral spice. On the palate flavors of blackberry and tart cherry flavors, with vanilla, licorice, citrus and herb spice. Fine tannins, well balanced long finish ending with tart fruit and a sweet earthy mineral character. Nice! A Fav! — 9 months ago

The conundrum with Continuum continues :)

PnP’d, thought that might be the trick. Was great to start but after 20-30 minutes devolved into a strange, astringent Napa Cab or CDP. Still can’t figure this wine out.

Napanook Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

From a pristine bottle - cork did its job, but was on the softer side and fell apart after extraction. This leans very herbal with notes of green pepper and green tobacco immediately perceptible on the nose. After that there are notes of earth. There was little to no perceptible fruit left at this stage, but it was a lovely, silk like experience and texture in the mouth with tertiary flavors such as leather, cedar, and some spice. This seemed like it was perhaps on the very early part of its downhill and was beginning to come apart, but should still have another few years left in the tank from properly stored bottles — 6 months ago

Dismissed by many as too jammy or too ripe, I’ve always thought this is the fun bottling. This ‘21 is no exception. Beneath the slightly over extracted ripe dark fruits lies quite complex aromas and flavors of figs, sweet spices, dark chocolate, smoke meat, and hint of balsamic. Rich palate but not overbearing. In a good vintage like ‘21, this can benefit for 5-8 years of bottle age.
My guilty pleasure.

Mountain Cuvée Proprietor's Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2022

Blend of Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot & Malbec. Deep Ruby, purple edges, youthful aromas of black fruit, spices, floral and flinty notes. On the palate flavors of blackberry and black cherry with some vanilla and tobacco and herbal notes. Vivid acidity, firm tight tannins with long finish ending with a vibrant character, a bit young, should benefit from bottle aging. — 3 months ago

Such a big wine, elegant and 10 feet tall!! This bottle has a big fruity nose with currants, cherries and then tops it off with cocoa. Delicious fruits up front with layers of depth. I agree with a lot of what others have written, just a nice bottle of wine. The tannins are super refined but clearly there. Just sipping it and enjoying the evening! Salute!!! — 4 months ago

Cain Five Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2011

A Burgundian-styled Cab Sauv from the one of the most compelling Sub AVA of Napa mountains (Mayacamas) which has an amazing soil and solid influence from the Pacific. Crafted with an amazing balance of 68% Cab Sauv, 20% Merlot, 5% and the rest to round it off its structure and age ability. The 2011 is still climbing to its peak. Enticing notes of dry red fruits on the nose and mouth, delicate, outstandingly silky and nearly perfect balance!
The finish shows its beauty. (if you find it, it won’t disappoint you) it will give the run for the money.
