Adega Regional de Colares

Arenæ Colares Ramisco 2006

Tiny production Ramisco (7,000 bottles) from own-rooted centurion vines on sand dunes outside Lisboa. Aged 3 years in hundred year-old Brazilian oak foudre - wha???

Beautiful wine, tart cherry, dried herbs, a little of that ol' saddle leather too. Moroccan lamb fits the bill rather well.

St. Nicolas de Bourgueil Cabernet Franc 2012

The aroma and flavor are quite tricky to describe because not like any other flavors we commonly know, but the most pronounced aspect of the wine is its texture, which is soft, so much so that it's first touch on the palate is almost unnoticeable, but then it builds, specifically with the emergence of tannins and an ever so slight spiciness. I want to believe however that the aroma and flavor are ineffable because they're only comparable to other wines from the Loire--it's not cherry or black pepper or whatever--rather, it's simply a great wine representative of its terroir. It just tastes like wine to me, and a great wine. It should also be noted that it's not rich--it's instead quite subtle. — 12 years ago

This was drinking great. Vibrant purple color, even at 10 years of age. Smoky and stony, with both a Syrah like aromas and a structure more like Gamay. It perfectly pins the expected aromas of a "mountain" wine with hints of wild herbs in the finish. Should be spectacular with an aged sheep's milk cheese like Ossau Iraty. — 10 years ago

This is the old vine cuvée. It was time to come back down to earth, and this simple, one-note Cab Franc did the trick. It had the olive & herb aromas and flavors and plenty of refreshing acid. — 11 years ago

100 year old own-rooted vines on sand dunes overlooking the Atlantic. Lots and lots of texture from 6 hours skin contact and short time in old Brazilian oak foudre, I also get sea air and pear skins. Perfect with aged cheeses and bring olives. — 10 years ago

Just had this in the shop. Such a cool wine, and continues to gain complexity and development over days open. Those vines are crazy.

Yeah, this was a final glass left after showing it the day before. I wonder how it does on a 3rd or 4th day, but being in 500ml it's tough to keep it around that long!

I had a glass on day 4, and it was still gaining complexity. The only reason it lasted that long is the little bottle got lost behind the regular 750s.

91 Terranum Selezione La Bora Chardonnay 1991

Idiosyncratic, singular, distinctive, you get the picture. The color is light but it does not lead you to its age. The nose pulls you in many directions, what is that smell I ask myself. One thing it is not and that is alcohol , which registers in at 10.5%. In the mouth very tart red fruit that jabs the inside of your mouth as if it contained pins. Very nice medium finish. A polarizing wine. — 11 years ago

R(Chris Ringland),B(Rolf Blinder), J(Russel Johnstone)

Château de Montfaucon

Baron Louis Cru Des Côtes du Rhône Lirac Red Rhone Blend 2010

From an estate just a stone's throw across the river from highly esteemed vineyards of Châteauneuf du Pape. The winemaker, Rodolphe de Pins, is a UC Davis grad and one of the former winemakers from Vieux Telegraphe. This wine's pedigree and classic style shows through. Complex and layered with notes of cherry, blackberry, garrigue, and pepper. It continues to bloom with another layer of floral, pine needles, and cedar. Lingering tannins and vibrant acidity polish the lustrous finish. The 2010 vintage was exceptional for the Southern Rhone, this wine included. — 11 years ago
