Very young wine that needed much more air/decanting. Nose was tight and hit the palate hard. With time it slowly mellowed out and became quite nice, with cherry and tar flavors. I would say the last glass or so was similar to the 2012 Burgess Cab we had prior, but not as fruitful or smooth. Lay this guy down for 3-5yrs or decant for twice as long as you think you need to. — 7 years ago
Are you kidding me?! Got this at the winery a few years ago. It's unreal how youthful this is. The color has faded to that of a dark Pinot, but very little bricking. Earthy notes, followed by fresh and decayed red fruits, there are still intense tannins that are so well integrated into the wine that it last on the palate for what seems to be hours. Birth year spectacular. #birthyear — 8 years ago
Color is dark ruby, with a burgundy/ purple rim.
Intense nose of vanilla, smoke, blackberries, blueberries, cedar, raspberry jam, leather, cherries, toast, metals, clove and black pepper.
Full bodied and elegant with medium acidity, balanced and smooth with long legs.
Bone dry on the palate with blackberries, plums, blueberries, cranberries, vanilla, cherries, toasted, oak, tobacco, dark chocolate, licorice, mint and herbs.
Long finish with full, smooth tannins and peppercorn.
A Great sipping wine. I enjoyed it by itself. Balanced, Complex and delicious.
This is My first Napa Syrah and it was great.

I’m not celebrating my birthday until the weekend but it’s always nice to have something the actual day of - thank you @James Forsyth for sharing this!! It’s delicious, the black currant really makes this taste 😍 chef’s kiss, as we millennials say. Almost dangerously good, it really tastes like the black currant juice I drink in Germany.
Also thank you to @Shea Bove @Matthew Burgess @Claire Troussieux for making today fun 🥳 — 5 years ago
Feels like it has started to come together but needs a few years (5yr). Motor oil-tar, leather, dark fruits, oak and alc. — 5 years ago
Full bodied wonderful wine, perfect with steak — 6 years ago
2013. dried red berries and fruit on nose, woodsy fresh cedar notes. firm chewy tannins. balanced. — 7 years ago
Pretty good. — 7 years ago
Delicious. Opens up beautifully in decanter for 30-60 minutes. Dark fruits, full bodied on the mid-palate with a delightful finish that is balanced and smooth but still tannic. Paired with aged cote de boeuf. What an incredible dinner paired with the perfect wine. Burgess wines can certainly age in the bottle, so we plan to buy another and lay it down for 10 years. — 7 years ago
I pulled into the driveway of this winery in Napa a few years back on a lark. A few days ago, I saw this bottle at Bondi in Bed Stuy and bought it remembering the excellent tasting that knocked more famous wineries low. Burgess is cut into a hillside on Howell Mountain and is one of the older privately owned wineries in Napa. This bottle is ready to drink. Blackberry, espresso, and herbaceous notes of anise and mint. Full-bodied and a steal at the $21 I paid for it. — 8 years ago
Incredible - could it really be this old? It sure didn't taste it. — 11 years ago
White peach, white flowers, smoky mineral backbone. A classic Sancerre. Pairs well with back patios overlooking the Burgess Creek in Steamboat. — 5 years ago
Classy Napa black fruited red blend. Chalky soft tannins. Should have decanted — 5 years ago
Gorgeous old Petite Sirah - old pipe tobacco, ripe plums, five-spice, liqueur like finish. Super rare now but I love these older Burgess wines. — 6 years ago
Very smooth Malbec. — 7 years ago
Dark and opaque. Nose of black olive tapinade. Enhanced by a great steak. Well balanced, quite elegant. — 8 years ago
Really improving in bottle. Excited to see where this goes. — 8 years ago
I've never had a Malbec from California. Dusty black berry, leather, black pepper. Grippy, but softened up after a 75 minute decant. Could probably age a couple years. — 9 years ago

Had to explain today how good these 1970’s wines from Burgess Cellars were. I may not have immediately thought it was Pinot Noir but it clearly was an older wine with plenty of charisma. Back when most Pinot Noir was insipid and nondescript this one became something special. — 5 years ago
