Had this beauty when I proposed to my fiancé! 1996 vintage brut by De Venoge out of Epernay! Age has done this champagne well. Nice creamy mouth feel, delicate, very fine bubbles, lemon zest, mousse, golden apples, toasted nuts.. arguably one of the best 1996 champagnes out there. A prime example of how a great growing year and proper aging after digorgement, like a 15+ year old vintage Cristal or Bolinger. Can't wait to try their vintage Rosé extra brut 2002, and their 2006 Rosé Brut that are also 93 rated! They both probably need several more years to mature so that the citrus acidity has lessened a bit and all the complexities emurge. Back from my tangent, try this champagne before there aren't anymore left! $199 at total wine for the gift set! — 10 years ago

A clean and clear appearance that is a pale lemon-gold in color.
The nose is medium+ in intensity, with both primary and secondary aromas which at first seemed rounder, but grew to be sharper and more intense than the entry level Sancerre.
The lemon citrus is there, but this time is thicker like a lemon curd. Ginger notes appear here as well. The nose is just as pungent as the entry level with herbs, but the level is more intense and the aromas overall are broader and deeper. The mineral note seems more subdued by the oak, but it is noticeable and seems more like smoked salt. The oak is not so much "oaky", it seems more textural to the other aromas of the nose like a seasoning, rather than any actual flavor. Aroma complexity is medium+.
The palate is a noticeable step up from the entry level wine in intensity (medium+) and much sharper complexity, with more body as well (medium). There is a feeling of a creamier texture, but not in flavor. This wine is very dry as well, it is lean and clean on the palate with high acidity.
The finish is long, with the flavors of lemon curd, ginger, smoke and fresh herbs sailing on for 30+ seconds.
From 70 year old vines, this is a high quality wine, maybe one of the best Sauvignon Blanc I have ever tasted. The wine is impeccably balanced and seamless from the attack to the long finish., Great now, this can go easily another 5 years adding depth and complexity from aging. This wine is one year older than the entry level Sancerre, and typical of Boulay, the higher end bottlings are more expressive with a few years of age. — 11 years ago

One of the best Olorosos I've had in quite some time. It is remarkably Madeira like-- much more so than other Olorosos I've had. This is really terrific. One of the best Chablis I've ever tasted. This bottling is from Sevrin's personal vineyards, not the Domaine. While at a small estate Burgundy tasting I expressed my dismay at the rep not having a Chablis. She just happened to have a bottle is this in her purse and let me try it. While I don't remember specifics from such a small taste, there was a very distinctive mineral and flint quality that was perfectly balanced with a lush roundness. Both wonderfully traditional AND delightfully distinctive. Can't wait to buy a case!! — 12 years ago

Had the '09 and really liked it. Smooth and complex finish. Drinks like a brunello but more fruit forward. Heard it was a cross between brunello and supertuscan and it definitely drank like it. Best of both — 9 years ago

Probably the best red I've had in a while. Round, balanced fruit, deeply rich and complex. A little chocolate and smoke in the middle, but a nice hint of a peppery, acidic finish right at the front of your pallet.

Best Sancerre I can recall having. To my palette, this was strong on tropical fruit flavors with hints of both vanilla and cream. Definitely worth buying a few bottles to keep at home. — 11 years ago

An absolutely fantastic offerring from Juan and company at Realm. Their merlot-driven cuvee with the rest cab franc, cabernet, and petite verdot, this wine boasts increbile fruit and depth of flavor. Sweet, ripe tannins and a long finish that both suggest many years of life, this is easily the best version of The Tempest that I've ever had (and I've tried every vintage of this wine). When Clyde told me we were going to do a dinner of 2000 vintage Bordeaux, I knew that the Champagne served had to be one of our very best. This wine has incredible depth and complexity from the slow ripening Arbanne and Meslier, along with the incredible acidity and brightness that can’t be shaken from these ancient varieties. Not many wines have both the breadth and length of this incredible, electric Champagne. It was a wower, especially with the salmon appetizer. — 11 years ago

This was like a really nice white Burgundy trapped in a Champagne's body. Or maybe it was the other way around. I don't know which but this blew my fragile oenological eggshell mind. By far the best Champagne I have ever had and by far the most unique. We drank this out of both flutes and red wine glasses to compare and contrast since it is very much atypical of Champagne. Next time I will drink the whole bottle as we drank only half of this one. Worth every penny. — 11 years ago
