Penfolds

Bin 389 South Australia Cabernet Shiraz 1996

You would never pick this as a 26 year old red wine from the colour. A rich Ruby red with no tawny rim. This has the Penfolds DNA of ripe plum, mocha, coffee bean and chocolate - a trace of liquorice. The palate is medium plus weight, balanced and harmonious maintaining that core strength. Those initially firm tannins have become supple. Drinking at its peak but could stay on this plateau for a couple more years. My last bottle of the 96 but I still have a few more bottles of the Bin 707 from 1996 which was a huge wine. — 2 years ago

Any thoughts on the 1983, 1986 and 1991 Grange?

@Byron Hewett The Granges you mention, I have all 3. The 1983 was the product of a drought year. I was planning to drink next year when 40 years old. The 1986 is very good - I have a couple left which I will drink by the end of this decade. I love the 1991 and it often sits in the shadow of the 1990 which really put Grange on the map in the USA winning Wine Spectators wine of the year. I have had several of both years and prefer the 91. You could drink these into the mid to late 2030s. Penfolds put out an excellent reference book on all of their wines and vintages called The Rewards of Patience. Highly recommended.

Bodega Sur de los Andes

Gran Reserva Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Aromas of plums, wet brown leaves and Forrest Floor. Flavors of cooked plums, raisins, cola and cocoa. Hint of cedar. Full bodied and nicely complex. Well balanced. Nice wine. Revisited in November 2021. Still holding up nicely. Above notes still apply. — 4 years ago

Ladera Vineyards

High Plateau Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Dark crisp ruby red in the glass and a nose full of blackberry, bright plums and cocoa. Medium tannins and nicely structured. On the palate it was very aromatic with sage, lavender and rose and a medium to long finish. This is a winner. Love Ladera and the Cabs are world class. — 7 years ago

Cheval des Andes Mendoza Malbec Blend 2016

If you will excuse the baseball euphemism, Cheval does not play small ball. And this venture in Argentina is brilliant. This one has been on her side long enough to enjoy long ball now, as in very long finish. And a fab value at < $100 — 10 months ago

Reserva Clos des Andes Mendoza Malbec 2016

Essentially a Bordeaux expression of Malbec. Cassis, dry blackberries. The mid palate is dry- not a bad thing, just wonder if this needs to be a Malbec. — 3 years ago

Terra Noble

CA 1 Andes Colchagua Valley Carménère 2016

This dark wine offers a nose of black fruit and cassis, painted with cedar, clove and cinnamon. The very expressive aromas put me in mind of the holidays. The palate is alive with the dark berry notes and oak spice, and a monstrous set of tannins that need some decant time to soften. Don’t worry, the wine will still handle any steak you put in front of it.
