Not sure why this vintage has received only fair reviews on CellarTracker, but this is a solid bottle of Zinfandel showing rich purple and black fruits, some mild spice and pepper notes, and enough complexity to hold interest. Air seems to help it unfurl a bit. There’s a little alcoholic warmth in the finish, but this is not a jammy zin by any means. The ‘12 was better, but this is quite enjoyable and I’m happy to have another in the cellar. — 6 years ago

Sour cherries and a touch of VA on the nose lead to a mid-weight Chianti with sweet and sour red cherries, orange peel, and almond skin on the palate. The acidity is in balance and the finish is long and clean. A very nice wine and a good value, for sure. — 6 years ago

Prior experience shows, for my palate, that these are better at middle-age than they are 10+ years out. This vintage of Elogé is in a really good place right now and is terrific with food. On its own, especially with extended air, the acidity sticks out a bit. But, as someone who typically opens wine to have with a meal, this hit the spot. — 6 years ago

Captivating nose on opening, with rich floral and dark fruit tones wafting from the bottle as soon as I pull the cork. This seems to be at peak for my palate. The tannins lay out a fine blanket on which the black cherry, black raspberry, and faint brown spice notes strut their stuff. There’s a pleasing old leather element in the finish, which just rolls on and on. This was my first Greer and I’m smitten. Fantastic wine. — 6 years ago

Just picked up a ‘12 that I plan to open when my youngest graduates from high school in two years. Her road has been a rough one, through no fault of her own, so we’ll have lots to celebrate when that day comes.

Drinking nicely with minimal air, this is already showing terrific balance and rounded tannins. The fruit is a touch fuller than is often the case with the entry-level the Felsina chianti, which contributes to its earlier accessibility. This vintage will surely drink well for quite a few years to come, but it’s delicious right now. Well done. — 6 years ago

I drank this over three days and kept waiting for it to show a little more delineation, but it just didn’t have it to show. I’m finding many of the $40-$60 wines from 2012 to be a bit underwhelming. They seem to be fairly straightforward and lack the definition and complexity other vintages have shown. I haven’t dipped into my higher-end 2012s yet, but I hope they don’t show the same character. — 6 years ago

Curious if you tried 2012 EMH. Two for two disappointments. I have only experienced that in the 2005.

Interesting, Diane. I haven’t had a regular ‘12 yet, but had a ‘12 Special Selection in June and thought it performed pretty well. From your notes, it seems the acidity felt too high in the regular ‘12, which I didn’t experience with the. SS.
