The 2016 'In The Hills' Syrah is a gorgeous showing in this vintage from Matt Reynvaan. This begins with inviting aromas of blackberries, smoked meat, wet rocks, Umami, bacon fat and blood orange rind on the highly perfumed nose. The palate shows an absolutely incredible mouthfeel with wonderful freshness and streaks of minerality. The combination of richness and tension is hard to resist right now as the stony character and herbaceousness seems to take center stage. Flavors of black tea, wild blackberry, orange zest and a just a touch of milk chocolate continue to build on the palate. While this should cellar well for a decade, it is simply stunning right now. Drink 2019-2028- 94

Med weight with nice extraction, fruit, tannins and acid show well at such a young age. Another excellent example of Matt’s attention to detail with Christophe Baron serving as the consultant winemaker.

My rating on this wine goes up and up every time I have it. Is there a better American Syrah? This evening I think not! So Côte Rotie!

Côte Rotie style Syrah. Very floral, raspberry, black pepper. Very smooth in transitions

Wine number 1,000. Explosive nose here and a unique one at that. Smoke and blackberry aroma draws you back - we had fun trying to figure this one out. Beautiful, complex palate of black tea, blackberry and fleeting hint of mocha. A fine choice for #1,000!
