Compared to the ‘03 on a hot vintage this was also fire (but the ‘03 was the winner).

Nose of strawberry and raspberry, body showing a little age, but no browning on the edges with long satisfying finish. Great wine

Hides its 15.6 well with rich fruit and a bit of savory poking through. A nice surprise.

Hard to say but probably my favorite wine of the last few days, I also love Syrah so I guess I am biased. Single vineyard, 75% whole cluster fermentation aged 17 months in 40% new French oak. Massive nose of black fruit, barbecue smoke, and herb. Continues on the palate with massive black fruit, cassis, herbaceous brambles, smoked meat, and smoke. Tremendous length which only highlighted the harmony and balance between the silky tannin and acidity. Great producer, like high end Northern Rhone, I am always amazed how great wine makers are able to tame and refine Syrah. From magnum, which has helped keep this alive. As well as its drinking you could tell this wine is edging towards past peak, so drink now if you got it. Opened at Charleston Wine and Company my favorite wine bar in town. Thanks Josh and Staff for the hospitality.

2004. Well integrated acid and tannin. Black olive on the nose. Brilliantly Californian, and really showing Sonoma's aging ability.

A wine from Pax Mahl before he and Joe Donlan had a parting of the ways, the 2004 Castelli-Knight Ranch has gotten better with age. Used to be overly peppery in my opinion, this is now a nice, well integrated syrah with a nice balance of primary and secondary aromas, some great layers of flavors, and good balance. An excellent wine with several years of life left to it.
