Very similar to the La Rioja Alta but, more fruit forward.

Excellent follow up to the 04 with our Tri-tip.

Photos of; my visit, their tasting room & lounge, Bodega Marquises, De Murrieta and their view from the Bodega terrace.

My son came over for dinner so I opened my last bottle! Beautiful Ruby red with an elegant bouquet of sweet berry fruits, subtle spice with earthy tones, a traditional Rioja. On the palate, the wine was silky smooth with layers of flavors, berry/cherry, tobacco, smoky cedar, dark fruit, vanilla spice, very well balanced with fine tannins and a clean structure ending with a nice lingering finish. Delicious! Still great with room to run. This wine shows potential aging well beyond 2020. I wish I had more!

Had this about 3 years ago. Gorgeous Ruby red with an elegant bouquet of cherries and berries, subtle spice with earthy tones, a traditional Rioja. The palate did not disappoint, the wine was silky smooth with layers of flavors, tobacco, smoky cedar, dark fruit, vanilla spice, very well balanced with firm tannins and a clean structure ending with a nice lingering finish. Delicious! Still great with room to run. This wine shows potential aging well beyond 2020. I have 1 more ‘05 bottle left!!!

Intensely aromatic. Black cherry, sweet and sour plum, cedar strips, black tea, graphite, toasted cardamom, and toasted vanilla pod. Palate coating and quite rich, this wine is not showing the slightest bit of oxidative character.

Tasty and dusty, late season ripe raspberry, blueberry and chocolate; finish runs about 2 minutes.

48hr Update: Nose is intense mocha cherry, palate is still beautiful. Suggest a 24 hour decant on future bottles, much better experience.

Pretty much textbook, classic, benchmark, keystone, (insert your own word for damn right). Dried out, ripe red fruits? Check. American oak? Hmm, coconut, dill, sweet and sour, and vanilla extract, so yes. Baked clay? Uh huh. Long, lingering and tart finish? Damn right. Sexy as all hell? Well I'll leave that up to the drinker...

This bottle just proves to me that rioja with at least some age goes best with charred filets and ribeyes, which is what we are having tonight. Upon opening I noticed a lovely floral character to the nose that followed after being poured into the glass. The rest of the nose had intense cigar box aromatics along with dusty red fruits and lilac florals. After an hour the floral notes take over and some semisweet chocolate also emerges. The palate still has tannins but a long, smoky finish that I can't help but enjoy. Amazing rioja. Amazing wine.
