No idea what the “pros” were drinking to give this a 8.8 rating average, but it wasn’t this. One of my favorite wines, this used to be 100% mourvedre but now I think is usually blended a bit with other rhone varietals from John Alban’s stable. The story behind the label is great - happy to share for those interested!

Wow. This is a small production offering from John Alban (usually 1-2 barrels at most). Mourvedre-dominated, this wine is spectacular (and very approachable for its age). Intense fruit, great balance, and a finish that goes on for nearly a minute. One of the great things about this wine - other than the wine itself - is the bottle. According to Lorraine Alban, the photo on the front shows a hat and cane that belonged to her grandfather. Better still is the font, a recreation of her grandfather’s handwriting from a letter he wrote to his future wife during The Great War. Just awesome.
