Today we have Fetzer Eagle Peak 2011 Merlot ( http://www.fetzer.com ). We got this wine for about $5.48 at the local grocer. Although the label says Merlot, this commercial California wine is actually a blend: 77% Merlot, 7% Syrah, 7% Petite Verdot, 5% Carignane, 3% Petite Syrah and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. The description on their website reads thusly: "This Merlot has a deep, rich, ruby color. Warm cherry aromas are accented with notes of mocha, red licorice, sage and toffee. Soft, round tannins make this wine easy to drink with flavors of black cherries and plums balanced with caramel and toffee from the oak." This is mostly true if you overlook the silly wine-speak adjectives. It is a reasonably solid red wine for ordinary drinking. I rate it two out of five stars.

Medium purple color. Mildly sweet with an oaky aroma. Hits the back of the tongue. Low acidity. Tannic. Very short finish.
