Was shocked to see this 1979 Mouton come into my establishment today and even more shocked that I got to try it! The cork crumbled but otherwise the wine was in perfect condition, full of turned earth and cigar ash to start and then developing floral notes with air. My guests commented that almost every sip was something new to experience and I can't deny that.

Crisp cherry, light forest. Rather short.

Producer > Vintage. And 3L > 750mL, if you're swinging for the 40yr fences. All melty, beautiful dried currant, cigar ash and gravel; finishing with a pop of pyrazine that played chimichurri to the steak. Much gratitude to my older friends that bought wines like this on release and held them for the future. 🙌

1979 was a light vintage with decent but not long lived wines. The Mouton is still alive and enjoyable but light and does not endure on the palate. Drink now.

Deep claret with ashy edges, this 35+ yr old is infinitely rich. It keeps changing by the minute becoming more complex and flavorful. Very surprised at how well it has held!

1979 - Château Mouton Rothschild - Pauillac -?%
Terra molhada, madeira velha, fruta escura madura e leve anis.
Boca equilibrada, bastante vivo ainda, com taninos finos, acidez no ponto com final mediano. Tem um leve verdinho no final da boca.
Maravilhoso

Still new to old wine but you can taste the age after an hour of breathing. Smooth tannins and a nice bouquet but generally not too exciting. Enjoyed it but really need more comparisons in this age range.
