Domaine Dominique Gruhier

Cuvée Juliette Bourgogne Epineuil Pinot Noir 2014

To steal a descriptor from a great customer, this is galactic. Spicy, chalky black cherries abound—also joy. Thanks, Dominique!

So much fresh, lively energy, yet unmistakably mature Nebbiolo. Don't judge only on vintage.

At Flatiron Wines. Full disclosure: We all work there. We get a lot of old wines at the shop—consider signing up for our emails, which is how we sell the lion's share of that type of thing.

Cascina Francia Barolo Nebbiolo 1997

1997. Keeps adding more distinct flavors to its delivery with every minute in my glass (open 2-2.5hrs). Salty Scandinavian licorice, roses, tar, wildflowers, menthol, black tea, beeswax, and something that is either frankincense or myrrh. #screwratings — 9 years ago

@Susannah Smith how would you do it instead?

Hey, @Barron Nydam, good question. I'd say there are three possibilities, which I lost in ascending order of my personal preference:

1) Keep the ten-point scale, but have all points of the scale from 0.0 to 10.0 available for use. Otherwise, this is a big virtual cheering section.

2) Have no ratings whatsoever. We're all literate adults and can use word pictures to talk about a subjective experience rather than trying to boil down a complex sensory experience that is at its core a matter of opinion and taste to a seemingly objective measure.

3) Because opinion and taste are a central part of tasting, do have a way to record how much you LIKE a wine, but I suggest just a five-star system, and crucially having zero stars as an available option. Sometimes wines are F-ed up and are no good.

And, as always,

Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, who's the fairest of them all? Belluard Ayse, of course! Just as delicious as the previous bottling, reflective Lisa Frank label notwithstanding. #screwratings — 9 years ago
