Value bubbles from Spain! — 5 years ago
Very nice Cremat. Oak aging does what it's supposed adding some complexity and depth rather than overpowering. Nice soft bubbles, good balance and excellent persistence ticking all boxes which one seeks from a quality sparkler. Great aperitiv but works through meal as well. Very good option for Christmas table be it then traditional or more modern cuisine. — 6 years ago

Olivier Riviere La Bastia 2019, one of Riojas young guns and a big part of the postmodern revolution of the region. Le Bastid is a 90% Viura, 10% Garnacha Blanca, fermented and matured in 500 liter French oak barrels.
With resemblance to a good Burgundy the wine opens up with ripe white stonefruit (plum juice, white peaches) and a lemongrass herbiness. Followed by a whiff of toast and nuts that lies over a stoney minerality. Good energy on the palate with a fresh acidity and savoury qualities on the mid palate that brings dimension and complexity through the finish.
Paired with an improvised salmon and shrimp casserole in a mushroom infused velouté topped with fried parsley and sourdough croutons.
Serve it at 10-12 degree in a burgundy glass

A new Rioja for me I grabbed in Spain from @gabymeetswine @vilaviniteca @ €105 & whilst nice I think it’s overpriced as you get just as good quality in many £40-£50 Rioja but that said it’s nice 😉 & quite unusually earthy & mineral laden 😁 leave 5 years 👍

🍇 Mazuela, Graciano & Tempranillo
🍷 Deep dark ruby
👃 Soggy earth, gravel, minerals & pencil lead through muted dark cherry w/ a light smokey soaked oak tone, red currant, balsamic & herbs then the oak really pushed through on steroids after a couple of hours
👄 Med body of red & dark cherry in balsamic w/ cocoa & minerals galore w/ a touch of blackberry
🎯 Med+ dry tannic red & dark cherry/berry cocoa mineral earthy linger w/ an okay follow through

GW tasting 12/13/16. $989. Nose of spices and nutmeg and nuts but not as prominent. Palate that's full bodied and honeyed and piercing acidity. Finish carries through and lasts a long time. Amazing. 2 generations kept on crypt Paradis. Very bold and long finish. Nose of mushrooms. Signature collection. Blend of uni and Collombard. Blend of 100 lots. 1000 bottles each year. — 8 years ago

This is 50% from The Rocks and 50% from the surrounding hills. Both basaltic rock-based terroir, but the it’s wind-eroded loess in form in the hill and the famous galets-like round stones in the river plain that is known as The Rocks. And, unfortunately, I got an email a few months ago saying this winery is shuttering. Sad, because their wines were excellent, if under-publicized. The nose on this is wonderful, with dense, vibrant dark berry fruit, a bit of fresh beef blood, and smoky gravel. In the mouth, it’s got dense, low-toned flavors that are contrasted with penetrating acids, which is not the norm in Walla Walla. It seems a little tightly wound but the tannins are well contained. It’s a beautifully balanced wine that seems a couple of years away from peaking, but is damn tasty right now.
I actually lucked into buying this bottle. When my wife and I visited, we wanted to taste it, but they said it was sold out. We tasted and talked and bought some other excellent wines (the GSM was terrific), and just as we were leaving someone came in with a case of this that was being returned for some reason. So we lucked into this bottle! Shoulda bought more! — 3 years ago
