The Society's Exhibition

Alfred Gratien

The Society's Private Cuvée Brut Champagne

Start of Christmas Celebrations. Excellent value champagne from the Wine Society. Extra creaminess from oak fermentation (fairly unusual, although Krug uses this method). Brioche, baked apple, lemon zest. — 9 years ago

C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España)

The Society's Exhibition Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo 2004

Super smooth, well developed both in oak and bottle (of course) but a very fine example. — 9 years ago

Concha y Toro

The Society's Exhibition Limari Valley Chardonnay 2014

Chablis. Citrus mineral steel. Great value for a tenner. — 9 years ago

Etienne Suzzoni

The Society's Corsican Rosé 2014

Palest salmon/peach colour.
Nose of fresh-cut granny smith apples.
On the palate, mineral, apple skin, stones. Crisp acidity, medium body. Light and refreshing like Ravel water music.

Weingut Günther Steinmetz

Mülheimer Sonnenlay Spätlese Riesling 1994

Petrol perfume, then a great depth of juicy exotic fruit on palate with a lengthy finish. Aromatically this wine might tempt some people to question if the wine is off, but for Riesling lovers it's an exhibition. — 12 years ago

The Society's Barbera d'Asti Suepriore

Pizza is good. Wine is good. — 9 years ago

Domaine Pierre Gelin

Clos Napoleon Fixin 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2011

Continuing on with my burgundy wine area deep dive while making my way through the French Wine Society's master class. Today's class was focused on terroir, as the soils change as you move through the Côte d'Or region. Fixin is towards the north side of the region and this premiere cru was grown up the slope from later Jurassic soils. — 10 years ago

Always a fantastic drop from the wine society — 10 years ago

Philip Togni Vineyard

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

Still a bit tight but a wonderful wine. Amazing balance. Kirsch dominates the nose and blackberries and licorice are present on the mid palate. Tannins are very well integrated. Great exhibition of Spring Mountain fruit with balance. — 11 years ago

I would think it'd be opening up by now. Off menu or your cellar?

Cellar. Togni makes really age worthy wines. Not too tannic but had good stuffing. Expect this is will shine in another 3-4 years but enjoyable now.

Matté
9.0

£11.50 Wine Society Forward, bright cocktail cherry with a pretty perfume along with fresh vanilla pod and kola nut. In the mouth this shows great weight across the palate, full and forward red berry fruit with a nice lick of acidity on the end, will certainly benefit food with a tomato sauce! 90pts — 12 years ago
