The Girl & The Fig

Austin Hope

Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Drinking the 2017 in 2019. Thick long lasting legs. Oaky nose with hints of marshmallow. Big flavor rich with fig, oak, plum and deep dark fruit. Slightly sweet with a smooth finish and very low tannins. Wonderful wine! — 6 years ago

On the palate, the body is near full. The tannins are beautifully rounded. It guides across the palate. So fresh and beautiful! blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, strawberries, cherries & creamy raspberries. Black licorice, vanilla, some fig, sweet soils, light baking spices, river stone, crushed rocks, cedar, with fresh red and very dark flowers. Beautiful round acidity and an elegantly polished finish.

La Rioja Alta

Gran Reserva 904 Rioja Tempranillo Graciano 2005

Classic Gran Reserva. Nose is leather and oak. Complex in the mouth with leather, oak, clove, cinnamon, tobacco, fig and a hint of blue cheese. It finishes with more oak, medium acid and chewy tannins. A lovely dark, blood red color to boot. At a meal, this is the main course. Me gusta. — 10 years ago

Silver Oak

Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

This is Silver Oak 2011, cab! The cork was perfect and the absorption was pristine. The color is deep purple. The bouquet is ripe fig tree, roses, and chocolate. The initial palate is blackberry and raspberries. The finish is light, slightly dry, and slightly acidic. I like it with a steak followed with a strong cigar. I will buy it as a restaurant wine. no more no less

1976 was almost fluorescent orange on release so many years ago now. Today it still has that telltale orange gleam but it's developed so beautifully. Orange peal, fig, honey, earth, mango, hazelnut, and on and on. 375ml still very fresh. Impressive. — 11 years ago

Heck of a hosting by @Weston Eidson last night for the City Club wine group. All wines were tasted blind.

Wonderful finish to the evening. It didn’t have as much sweetness to it as I normally think Graham’s does. Mixed berry compote, graham cracker, nutty, and cherry liqueur infused fig. My guess here was late 80s/early 90s port.

Heitz Cellar

Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1970

WNH Southern gathering hosted by @Mike R and old Heitz vertical (70,74,85) sourced by @Martin G Rivard (from Benchmark) who also contributed some on his own dime. This ‘70 started with a wet cardboard musty nose and a slightly hollow mid palate and astringent finish. As the evening evolved and the steak showed up the wine did a complete 180. More tannins than fruit but it was a structured beauty that may not be at it’s peak but is still a gorgeous wine. Ripe plum, stewed fig, bayleaf. I didn’t get any eucalyptus from this but there’s a strong earthy, old world with a CA spin vibe. After dinner and before the fire pit some of us finished the decanter of this and were impressed at how it was still ascending hours after being opened. — 8 years ago

Las Alturas Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014

Ming L
8.9

The Clark & Telephone Vineyard PN gave me a long lasting impression, and this Las Alturas is very similar in style in its richness and intensity.

Ripe plum, blackberry jam, eucalyptus, fig, black tea, and Chinese medicinal herbs bursting on the nose. Palate has more texture and a more elegant feel with dark chocolate and spice. Firm and a bit dusty tannins. This tastes more like a blend of Zinfandel and Cab. Nice! But again this is not the type of PN I like.

Haden Fig

Bjornson Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014

Drinking like a French Pinot, the bouquet is evocative of cherries, strawberries, tea, forest floor, and crushed crushed flower, while the pallet shines with black cherry, tea, hints of cinnamon and allspice, and earth. A consummate exemplar of Willamette Valley. Get 1 of the 200 cases while you can. — 9 years ago

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 2009

Here is what Wine Spectator says about this wine. One of the more endowed 2009s, this is packed with dark smoldering cocoa, mesquite, tobacco and roasted fig notes, all inlaid with pure cassis and plum preserves fruit flavors. Long and authoritative on the finish, with singed vanilla bean and tar notes adding length and dimension. Not sure I could have come up with all of these descriptors but a beautiful wine in my opinion. — 9 years ago
