Grido Toscana Merlot 2012

It's time for some #Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Here is a nice surprise from Italy.

Ruby in color with a wide reddish, cloudy rim.

Strong nose of blueberries, cherries, raspberries, red currants, oak, light vegetables, vanilla, spices, earth, beef jerky, dark coffee and light barnyard.

Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity and thin legs.

Dry on the palate with cherries, strawberries, red currants, oak, tobacco, vegetables, earth, light vanilla, wet leaves, green vegetables, herbs and black pepper.

Tangy finish with soft tannins and tart raspberries.

This is a very nice Super Tuscan Merlot. Showing nice complexity with a soft mouthfeel. Drinking very nicely now as a 7 year old.

Needs 3 hours to open up properly and show some tannins and complexity. After 6 hours, big tannins come in. This has many years in it still.

Good by itself or with food. I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses. Goes really well with the Brie cheese.

100% Merlot Grapes were aged in oak barrels for 24 months.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

Not the Syrah - it's the Merlot blend. Beautiful wine, drink now. — 8 years ago

Re di Renieri IGT Toscana Merlot Blend

A really fun Bordeaux blend (Merlot dominant) grown exclusively in the Brunello di Montalcino region. Unfiltered, and it shows, the silty smoothness is fascinating. Red and black fruits, tootsie roll and hot earth are highlights of both the nose and palette. A very different type of Italian wine, but a fabulous super Tuscan. — 5 years ago

Drank 11/16/17. Tasting pour.

Nose of earth and leather. Suprisingly modest nose for a wine of this caliber. Palate of tar and black cherry, with firm, still unresolved tannins. I would age for at least 5 years. Rated on potential. For the price, I vastly prefer the plain Renieri bottling from the same year.

Once it's had a chance to breath, this wine really delivers. Notes of licorice, tobacco, current and other good stuff.

Nose with more earthy notes than the Renieri, more reminiscent of brunello. Black cherry, leather and tar also evident on the nose. Rich black cherry and cocoa powder mixed with earth, backed by firm tannins. Full body. Long finish with dark fruits and tar notes. Let this age a few more years.

Riserva Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2010

I have to compare it to their previous year, in 2009, where it clearly shows consistency, yet improvement in quality, balance and clarity. James Suckling has rated this one with a perfect score of 100 points. Now, I don't know if I fully feel that this deserves a perfect rating as such, but I will definitely say that he is onto something here.

The wine showed beautiful clarity and garnet color, looking deceivingly delicate in the glass. The nose was very aromatic - notes of rose petals, smoke, wet rocks, raisins/prunes, tobacco, and graphite were all present. The pallet was very concentrated, full bodied, and lean in structure, exhibiting notes of dried cranberries and blackberries, dates, bay leaf, black pepper, and cloves, surrounded by youthful gripping tannins, and an everlasting finish harboring some firm acidity.

I will say that I thought this wine is one of the best Brunello's I've had the pleasure to have, but in the end it was just another Brunello di Montalcino, which isn't a bad thing, but it didn't quite absolutely stand out to impress me where I would rate it 100 pts, but that could change in the long life this wine will live. Bravo, Tenuta Renieri.

Great review Matt - I've been wanting to try this Brunello! The 100 by JS is certainly impressive for a $120 bottle.
