Character is an amontillado sherry made off dry by the addition of Pedro Ximénez. It shows a bright golden amber in the glass. At once saline and sweet, the bouquet includes date, sultana, salted caramel, nut shells and maple syrup. The interplay of sweet and savory is divine. Nearly dry and pillowy in texture, the soft palate is cut by zesty citrus notes and heaps of walnut character. Intense mushroom sprouts along the endless finish while a salty tinge lingers on the throat. Incredible value for $12. — 10 years ago

The 2000 Quinta do Noval Porto Colheita Tawny is superb, showing warm and welcoming notes of caramel, dried fruit, honey, sultana along with a pinch of toast. The mind immediately jumps to pairings like stilton, Roquefort, or dried fruit, though, surprisingly the staff at Noval recommend trying it with fresh carrot, unpeeled. I love the this Port's vibrancy and balance, the palate bright, like a newly minted penny, its brimming over with walnut shells, figs, golden raisins, and spice cake. Tasted together, the 1983, I'm told was the better vintage. After 32 years, that sentiment still holds true. The aromatics have developed into a demure and perfumey elixir of dried rose petals, forest floor, spearmint, sassafras, and allspice. Its brickish in the glass, the color of worn leather, and yields intriguing, atypical notes of wild game, sultana, dried blood and iron ore. Knudsen Vineyard blocks are seated on iron-rich Jory soils, is it possible that this is the evolution of Pinot grown in this soil type? — 9 years ago

It may not be wine but it's surely not far off it. The Brewer Søren Eriksen even describes this (his) beer as "vinous". The sultana and pinot noir flavours certainly come through in addition to roasted cloves (if that can even be described as a flavour). Delicious! — 11 years ago

Almost like a completely different wine. I had to double check the vintage to make sure I was drinking the same wine as I did a few months ago. A ripe cordial like concentration still that had it reminding me of its port-like character, especially in texture. The dried fig, sultana and sticky date element is still there but wrapped in an abundance of fresh raspberry and black cherries. It is interesting to note that Neipoort crafts primarily Port wines, so this dry red table wine that is a field blend from 70+ year-old vines is intriguing. The nose is almost Port-like with deep perfumy notes of plums, sultana, roasted black cherry, expresso and liqueur and spice…leaning toward, cardamom and white pepper. Silky on entry, yet totally gutsy and dry, with a core of fruit wrapped in refined tannins and moderate acidity. Dried apricot on the finish. — 9 years ago
