July's monthly WTF group meet up. Blind tasting with a theme of French wines. Bravo to all those who joined...great wines!

Didn't really have to blind guess this as it was the only champagne. No idea what this cost but it was awesome. Singular strand of bubbles. Crisp. Toast, brioche, pink lady apple finish. Great champagne. Thanks Donnie!

Its really nice of you to host and bring together your wine loving friends and the sisters of Bacigalupi (their wines are totally 10s and Katey and Nicole are so nice - wish them all the success), great food and your stash to boot. Great to meet new friends and see old friends too. Thank you guys

Heitz Cellar

Bella Oaks Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2003

The first day this one was in a really weird place. Typical mint, but with a strand of cough syrup running through. Day 2 it blew off and was back to the red fruit, cocoa powder, mint combination I know and love. I saved one glass and let it evolve over the course of the last week. Still going strong -- cherry cola, menthol and a bit maderized. It's a shame Heitz sold this vineyard to Staglin.... — 8 years ago

Château Larrivet Haut-Brion

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

Close-out buy from my homegirl. On it's last leg, bit for $20/btl? I'll take it - and drink it...needs grilled fish or any lighter meat application, as the acidity is the strand that keeps the whole ball of yarn together — 11 years ago

Lagunitas Brewing Company

New DogTown Pale Ale

Had this fresh at the Lagunitas brewery, like it very much, pick up some very fresh 12 0z bottles, Just as good happy to say, this is a very good pale ale, big hops, nice fruit notes, has that very familiar Lagunitas Hop strand that gives it that very special quality, nice! — 11 years ago

Equipo Navazos

49 La Bota de Amontillado Sherry

If I could rate this one 11, I would...
In Dutch:
“Amontillado at its brillant zenith”. Kippenvel en een eerbiedige stilte zijn hier het gevolg van.

Maison Pierre Overnoy Arbois Pupillin 2010 Chardonnay

Smoky, golden, honey, hints at Amber in colour. The sediment that you usually find down the side of old(ish) reds seems in-flux here, as you lift the bottle to the light the sediment shifts like a vinous DNA strand, a rare sight.
Nose is subtle but with plenty of depth. Quince jelly, smoky honey, curry leaf, apple/treacle/pecan tart, apple sauce but with an overriding, roughhewn rockiness to its character.
In the mouth there is complexity but it's more about texture and mouthfeel than well defined fruits. Although this is mineral, refreshing with high acidity there is an incredibly appealing richness too. Monolithic is not a word that I would often use for a wine but it seems to sit well here, there are few contours or subtle intricacy. It will be fascinating to see how this ages
