Drink chilled. Had a lovely glass in Newcastle at the vineyard and a bottle with Tessa back home — 7 years ago
HUNNICUTT is a family owned and operated winery founded in 2002 by Justin Stephens. The name ‘HUNNICUTT’ was Justin's great grandmother’s maiden name, is Justin's middle name and the middle name of their daughter Parker Hunnicutt Stephens. Some Somona fruit added, stone fruit aromas with citrus notes. On the palate the fruit shows nicely with Asian pears and crisp apples, with plenty of citrus zest. The finish had some generous mineral notes, sweet vanilla spice and nutty oak, which lingered very nicely. — 7 years ago
Merlot monday. Solid 30 dollar wine from napa.
Preparing my wine contribution for saturday's festivities. Showing some friends around livermore wineries so picked out some wines to show the terroir. These are my top 5 livermore wineries. And a couple napa wines for dinner as well.

This is the "second" wine from Husic Vineyards but I struggle to call it a second wine. Made by Mike Hirby (Relic, Winter, D.R. Stephens), the wine is a deep red in the glass. The nose is full on raspberries and blackberries with baking spice. The palate delivers dark fruits, light oak, moderate tannins, light acidity. Heavy sediment. I think this could be laid down for another 5-7 years and still be strong. A very nice wine. — 8 years ago

Kirk Venge knows a thing or two about making Zinfandels. He also makes another of my favorites with Biale Vineyards, known as Black Chicken. For David and Monica Stephens, he partnered up to make this deep dark Zinfandel with a chewy fruit and a jammy texture (but not jammy sweetness). — 9 years ago

We visited Hunnicutt based on visit to DR Stephens. Don Stephens (DR Stephens) is the father of Justin Stephens, owner of Hunnicutt. We went to see if the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. After @Jason and Jennie tasted the stunning 14 DR Stephens Collateral with us at a great tasting event they organized, we visited DR Stephens last year. Finally, appointment times aligned for us to visit Hunnicutt this market trip.
Andrew their Hospitality Director was our host. He is a very nice guy and shared a well of knowledge about Hunnicutt with us. We started our tasting with the new release of their 17 Sonoma Chardonnay.
On the nose; bright green apple, lemon, pineapple, some buttered popcorn, limestone minerals, saline, some marzipan, custard, cream, fruit blossoms, spring flowers and yellow lilies.
The body is full, round with very good texture. There’s a waxy character. Green apple, lemon, pineapple, honeysuckle, some buttered popcorn, limestone minerals, saline, some marzipan, custard, cream, fruit blossoms spring flowers and yellow lilies. The acidity is round & beautiful. The well polished finish is; elegant, seamless with some white spice and volcanic minerals on the long set. Nice bottling.

$29.99. From Hop City at Krog Street. Served chilled per Stephens recommendations. — 8 years ago
Oh yeah - expectations were subdued even though I really like Kirk Venge (winemaker) and Justin Stephens who learned his craft from one of my favorite wineries DR Stephens
That said, this blew me away - like a spectator at gran prix race as race flies by at 200+ mph and you say wow
what is there not to like
Just beautiful deep purplish red color - rich deep with texture you tell is there but cannot really see - decanted for two hours but seriously great first sip - really tasty - made your entire mouth feel special - later the taste just got better and better - just taste and you say awe - full of supple bright cherries and blueberries which go from front to mid palate with tannins that just balance the fruit nicely - nice structure and balance - the finish was special and loooooong
Then let's not forget the smell - I really need to describe as best I can - notes of berries and dark cassis dance all in the glass with layers of complexities that my nose was smiling as well as my mouth - but make no mistake - there a big bold beautiful beast within this bottle
Drink now and for 10 plus years as it will get better - end of bottle smiles were noticeable and not hard to see - really think this is special and highly recommended — 8 years ago
DeKalb Farmers Market find - really love it! Great with roasted chicken last night and filet tonight. Going back for more. — 9 years ago
On any other night, this Lewelling would have been more impressive but, it followed the 03 DR Stephens Moose Valley Vineyard PNV and that’s just not a fair race.
If you tasted this blind with other Left Bank Pauillac wines, many would have called it Pauillac.
The nose has dark creme de cassis. It’s big and brooding. Dark currants, blackberries, black raspberries, black plum, stewed strawberries and heavily extracted blueberries. Kirsch cherries, dark forest floor with leaves, turned black earth, limestone, river stone, dark chocolate, caramel, vanilla, light clove, mocha powder, black tea, anise, crushed dry rocks, underbrush, leather, port notes, herbaceous notes, light mint with fresh bright red and dark withering flowers.
The palate full, brooding and heavy. Years of life ahead. The tannins structure still big but, rounded. The tension still a little monster. The length and balance are developing but, need another 5-8 years plus easily. Dark creme de cassis. It’s big and brooding. Dark currants, blackberries, black raspberries, black plum, stewed strawberries, plum skin and heavily extracted blueberries. Kirsch cherries, dark forest floor with leaves, dry clay, turned black earth, limestone, river stone, dark chocolate bar, caramel, vanilla, light clove, mocha powder, dark spice with heat, black tea, anise, lead pencil, crushed dry rocks, underbrush, leather, port notes, herbaceous notes, black pepper notes, light mint with fresh bright red and dark withering flowers and bright violets. The acidity is round. The finish is heavy, rich, elegant, well balanced fruit and earth and lasts several minutes.

Many of you that read my notes know I am not a fan of young Cabernet. However, this is special stuff and drinking nicely tonight. As well as it drinks, it not complex...yet! When its 10-15 years old, it had superstar potential. It’s ruby, gorgeous fruits of cassis. Blackberries, black raspberries, black plum, loads of baking spices, spice, leather, velvety strong tannins, dry crushed rocks, graphite, dry crushed rocks and lavender and violets for days. A really big finish but it’s elegant, rich and very long. Thanks to @Jason Oliver for bringing this wine. — 8 years ago
