All upfront. No finish. Big bold dark fruit. A small hint of cherries. As it opens up., there is more of a dry finish. — 7 years ago

2014. I'm glad I have a few more bottles of this. My first impression was that there was too much oak but… I think I was wrong about that. I believe I just opened this one way too soon. This wine has all the tools for the long distance: fruit, acid, structure, and concentration. Right now it has delightful texture but it's a little bit awkward in spots. That is, I realize, just youthful exuberance. This complex chardonnay is going to be ready for its close-up at some point. But not right now. Give it a few years. You both deserve it. — 8 years ago
Tonight, the '06 Lagier Meredith Syrah, is showing like a top-shelf Cote Rotie. The nose is displaying intense, rich dark fruits, soaring floral aromatics, sweet spice & herbs, moist earth and crushed stone. On the palate, a mix of crushed blackberries, raisins, licorice and plum saturated the senses complemented by sweet herbs, and hints of citrus. As intense a display as it is, the textures remain refined and fresh. The finish is long with bitter dark fruit and remnants of fine tannin. Although ripe, it shows tremendous depth and energy. — 9 years ago

The 2005 Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva Blanco is a sensational blend of 90% Viura with 10% Malvasia all sourced from the Viña Tondonia Vineyard. The wine was aged for six years in American oak barrels and then for an additional six years in bottle prior to release. The wine itself begins with intense aromas of salted pear, marzipan, smoked pineapple and hints of apricot all taking shape beautifully in the glass. Bright and intense, with a gorgeous mouthfeel, this wine delivers both a silky texture and lithe minerality. Hugely complex flavors of wet stone, green apple, smoke and starfruit all combine on the palate. Gorgeous and generous now, with an exceedingly long finish, this beautiful wine has decades ahead of it. Drink 2019-2038- 95 — 6 years ago

It’s not often that I open a note with a resolute, Wow, but the 2013 Gourt de Mautens deserves such praise. The bouquet opened with an intense display of white pepper, crush mint (or is that basil), rosemary, moist earth and hints of sweet brown spice. On the palate, it was impossibly soft and enveloping to all of the senses, yet vibrant with a display crushed violets, black fruit, and savory olive. Tannins mounted toward the finish as the wine resonated on peppery spices and a resounding note of black olive. I can't wait to see where this wine is going over time. — 8 years ago
2000 Lafite was shockingly showing more mature than I expected, lots of tertiary notes. Many wines like this can hit a plateau where it can sit for over a decade or more in this same state of enjoyment, then get even better. The 2005 outclassed the 2000 in pure enjoyment as the youth of its character allied with a supremely fragrant nose captured my senses' full attention.

Obviously biased but this new 2013 Vineyard 36 Thirty Six is an explosive 100% Napa Valley Cabernet. Only going to improve over the next year and will certainly cellar for 7-10

Very sexy...reminds me of a Washington cab, maybe from DuBrul. Now if only the Easter bunny would bring me a bottle of Le Dome — 11 years ago
First time tasting YQuem and it is truly in a class of its own so hard to justify a ranking. But for pure pleasure it’s also hard to imagine anything better. It’s flavors seem elusive, and shade into each other tricking your senses, all of which is intensely enjoyable. When you try to focus on its honey sweetness it turns its darkness on you and is all herbal. When you call out its mouthfeel it slides past you, both unctuous and feathery. Amazing experience. — 6 years ago
